There’s a mix of both approaches. I suspect most are the latter at least for customer facing roles.

Honeycomb. For shorter traces (most of them), a waterfall view is great. For those long ones, we try to split them up if it makes sense but you can also just run queries scoped to that trace to answer questions about it (how many of the spa

This is just not true. We have traces with hundreds of thousands of spans. Those are not very readable but that’s another problem.

Leisure is already more than half of the trips on UK rail. It’s mostly people living their lives. Reducing demand seems mostly a dead end to me except perhaps along very busy commuting corridors, of which there aren’t that many and of which

One could say the same about a combustion engine, really. Battery packs last way, way longer than most people think because they analogise it to phone batteries which are quite different. The resale value of a degraded pack is also going to

The booster needs lift points anyway for manufacturing and moving it to the launch mount. You can’t engineer those out, really.

In Cambridge we have recently had both our first Dutch roundabout and our first few Cyclops [0] junctions and I have to say I actually prefer the cyclops. Yes, you lose momentum if you want to turn and the throughput doesn’t match a roundab

Wireless buds also don’t pull out of my ears when the wire gets caught, or need replacing when the moving parts wear down (I’ve had my current earbuds for several years, I can’t remember ever having wired headphones that lasted more than on

I’m not sure I’d bet much on that “before” long part. At least not as far as Cambridge, the other end seems more certain.

What nonsense. Are you worried about physical spam mail? That ship has already sailed. I genuinely can’t think of any other abuse vector for a dataset like this.

Yes. What you ask is just as important as whether you’re talking to your customers. The Mom Test is the best book on this.

Live video or audio chat is basically the only time you do want this. Granted, that’s a big chunk of microphone usage in practice, but any time you are doing higher fidelity audio recording and you have set up the inputs accordingly you abs

Is it not already illegal to deliberately mislead a courtroom? Many of the same concerns apply, and yet thankfully the solution is not generally to throw our hands in the air and say it’s impossible to deal with the nuance.

I think electric cars could change this equation. The savings are high enough and the inconvenience low enough.

With heat pumps (like AC) and condensing boilers, it is often more efficient to run for longer and slower as long as that makes your appliance run more efficiently (lower flow temperatures for heating, higher for cooling). Requires the syst

It’s often better not to compost under a new plant because it encourages it not to spread its roots. Instead mulch with it and the rain and worms will bring the nutrients down.

I own an electric car and no home charger. I charge at work, mostly. It works well for me. The solution will involve a range of options for a range of circumstances- what I do wouldn’t work for everyone but that’s ok.

Not quite seaside -> inland, but the area around Ely is still called the Isle of Ely because Ely used to be an island surrounded by marshy fenland, often flooded by the wash from the North Sea. The fens were drained in the 17th century o

My (UK) house is worth 3x the total rebuild value my mortgage provider wanted me to insure it for. This implies the land it’s built on (and the planning permission to build the house) is worth twice what the structure is worth.

Exactly. It also makes sure you don’t pattern match the product as “inferior quality”. You assume “average quality”, and in fact (at least in the UK) many Aldi versions of products now have a reputation for being surprisingly high quality -

I think I agree to some extent. I like parts of all 3 definitions presented here, and I feel the new definition loses some of the clarity by omitting the fact that we’re interested in a particular system at a time. But I really like this bl
