There is a QGIS plugin for this API as well which is excellent. Note that in openstreetmap.com you can zoom in and query items (cursor with question mark icon) to get the feature information that you then use in Overpass. Very useful!

Yep. This is what makes QGIS such a great option. Being open source means it is both free and you can easily get your hands on old versions should you need them. It’s success comes from having a good enough GUI these days.

At least for static representations, you can get some amazing quality GIS visualisations from QGIS with minimal experience and a bit of work. Paid online GIS visualisations have to compete with some pretty good open source stuff that is o

My entry into birdwatching was a superzoom camera and the AI identification tool in iNaturalist. These days I don’t need much tech to ID a bird, but it is what helped me enrich my world in a wonderful way. Smart binos like this just lower t

For those keeping score. There are roughly 9-11k bird species. So these binos claim to be able to ID +90% of them.

Depending on which Aussie state you are in, there are consumer protections which allow you to exit these contracts with a simple email. At least this is was the case for me in WA.

Is this because of the data quality and difficulties with merging across CRSes or otherwise slightly differently aligned datasets? I dabble in geospatial data for my work in air quality modelling, accuracy for me means being within approxim

While there isn’t anything particularly novel in this list, I do like how this highlights the process of technical/science communication. The way to get good at sci comms is to practice it and to query your audience when they don’t und

The internet repeats itself a lot. If you want truly novel and thoughtful content you will want to turn to books. Audiobooks are fine, so are obscure technical corners of the web, what you want is the deep and expert content that is not sur

They do mention it in passing, but there is no way to statistically control for that without a randomised controlled trial (or Mendelian Randomisation). There is no reason to think that working outside hours is the cause of the problem. It

I had some issues with several sites around 2-3 years ago but I haven’t been experiencing them recently. I guess FF has issues on a fairly small set of sites which some users use a fair bit while most users don’t see those sites at all. The

This is part of the current cycle of fragmentation. Twitter is no longer the centre, but it still holds certain cultural niches. Other niches have migrated to Mastodon or elsewhere. I am personally pretty excited to see this diversification

As a counterpoint; I really like threaded posts like these. Each post in the thread becomes a kind of sub-heading or meta-paragraph which allows the user to disengage at well defined stops. At the same time, it’s understandable that people

Its the same as Covid where people said it was going to kill everyone or was an authoritarian conspiracy. chatGPT is neither the singularity or useless junk. I use it everyday at work to write code but it’s not about to take my job either.
