>Per mile incident rate is a measure only the companies care about This is a very frustrating sentence to read. If the per mile incident rate of driverless cars is 1 and the per mile incident rate for normal cars is 2. What happens when

I mean I would take AI autocomplete in the style of copilot. That feels conversational enough already, it would be even better if it’s optimised for prose instead of code. The MS word autocomplete is getting pretty good and I would love mor

Google will be leveraging the millions of people using google docs that will never go out of their way to use an ask a PDF tool. I know I haven’t bothered even though I am technically skilled enough to do so.

I get more engagement on Mastodon than I did on Twitter. New twitter accounts are essentially shadow banned by default whereas that is not the case on Mastodon.

I did post that I was leaving as doing so did genuinely interrupt some nascent friendships I had developed on Twitter. I am sad I lost those, but staying there seemed worse at the time.

For those unwilling to follow a twitter link: the latest post is from 2 days ago. Which is much more recent than his "I'm leaving" annoucement. EDIT: I guess this begs the question then, how do you break the cycle? Do you jus

I mean it is worth the attention and topical for this site. But it is unusual. Bots are active on HackerNews so it depends on whether they got past the moderation here. Hard to do anything about the kinds of bots, possibly just humans from

I would go further and argue the parent comment is being deliberately disingenuous. Medical statistics are always circumstantial and clouded by uncertainty. That’s why we have rigorous study designs in people and a shit load of mice studies

I think the fake data is more like “block and report spam”. Which is what I do for every email that I don’t want to see. I agree that there is no need to play nice. Companies are not respecting my time so they can suffer the consequences.

I don't see the link between for-profit fedi instances ruining non-profit ones?

Why do they need to be profitable? There are plenty of instances that get enough funds to keep things online without any profit motive.

These tools exist at least between activity pub and RSS. I suspect similar will exist for bluesky if it takes off. https://github.com/dariusk/rss-to-activitypub

Have you considered that a lot of people use both platforms and don’t really care about the politics of it? Those who do care are very loud (on both platforms) but they might be a minority in practice.

Bingo! Being open to access, but heavily moderated, is the perfect spot for them. HN is essentially perfect for it's use case and is unlikely to change soon.

Electricity markets are a prime example of ideology winning over logic. In Australia, the eastern states have a privatised electricity market while Western Australia has a very limited market with agreements to hold a certain amount of gas

Yeah the dollar values here are a distraction. I use copilot everyday at my Data Science job. Its useful! What we are not considering is integrating a custom trained LLM into our work because the tech just isn’t there yet.

This is a good point. The problem is that most people simply don’t care about these nuances. If the AI hallucinates or is wrong, then in their eyes it is lying. It doesn’t matter if that opinion is wrong because its still the opinion that m

You don't need the pressure of VC capital to have greedy business owners try to do vendor lock-in.

For this article in particular the author could have cut the entire intro down to two sentences and then each of the 25 tips could be one or two sentences each. Nothing of value would have been lost, indeed, that's all I read of it. Th

I agree with the problem of federation identity but suspect this is partly an “image problem” in the sense that less specific and broader identities are a fix. As for being subject to the whims of the instance; that is no different to reddi

I tentatively disagree here. The only required complexity for federation is choosing a server/instance. Once you are using it the experience could be made frictionless. I think a big problem people have had with trying to join federa

Depends if you care about CO2 and presumably the CO2 from breathing humans. The VOCs from cars in a busy city will mask/overwhelm/confound any measure of human body produced CO2 in that location. But a more suburban or rural locat
