Agreed. Maybe it was just the April-2020 of it all, but "Writing is Suffering" really hit me in the feels. It's inspiring to see all your hard work reach this milestone, and I can't wait to hold it in my hands.

Incidentally, I've proposed official image annotations[0] that would let an image tell you what its base image is, both by immutable digest and by mutable tag, so you could detect this drift automatically. Automated tooling could look

container-diff[0], mentioned in the article, is a really useful image release tool, that I don't think gets enough love. 0: https://github.com/GoogleContainerTools/container-diff

Yep! By default ko bases images on gcr.io/distroless/static:nonroot which provides certs and other necessary basics, all in a nice tidy package.

Shameless plug: if you just need to build a container that runs a Go program, you can't do it much simpler than with https://github.com/google/ko `ko publish` does a `go build` and stuffs it in a base image, it ev

If you're building images from go binaries you can do that without Bazel using github.com/google/ko :)

I think we're talking about different goals. I thought the goal was to foster a productive community working together on a project. Forking is a solution, but it doesn't exactly grow a community.

If we're talking about small personal OSS projects, then yeah sure it doesn't really matter, because they're won't be a community to speak of. Once you have a few other maintainers and contributors, there will inevitably

Or else what? "Asshole" according to whom? How are disagreements about assholery resolved? This (and the original NCoC) is naive wishful thinking that won't survive first contact with an actual community issue.

Since it's not using a multi-stage build, go dev tools are clogging up the image, losing the benefit of using alpine in the first place. https://link.medium.com/S2z0PtVHQ1 If you're just running a go binary you ca

It is a pretty great adaptation, and pretty difficult if you think about how you can express things in a book vs movie. I really enjoyed this video essay breakdown of the adaptation process: https://youtu.be/QTxvzkwVsQE

Oh there's definitely a point at which you save money buying the hardware and running it yourself. But especially for hobby usage my experience is that's often further out than real usage. YMMV. I think I'd save money by rent

You can already get 1-4 GPUs on VMS with 64-96 vCPUs in a number of regions: https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/gpus/#gpus-list Is the problem that the CPU max scales with the number of GPUs, so you can&#x

The question is, what workloads do people have that they'll run often enough and/or profitably enough to warrant those 64 CPUs sitting around idle when they're not using them. This is the advantage of a cloud host. Sure you p

I made this as a fun project to play with the container registry API, CNCF buildpacks and Google Cloud Run. It's a silly hack, don't depend on it for anything real. Some fun things to try: docker pull random.kontain.me/

Based on the simplicity of the build it's doing, there's basically no reason to invoke Docker to produce the image at all. You could use a tool like ko[0] to simply build the Go binary and place it on top of a base image (or keep
