That’s good advice for those that care, and I should have mentioned it, especially for HN crowd. I definitely noticed this problem when I did Google Takeout on my photos dating back to the Picasa days. I still think that for most people (

I keep the most important pieces on printout in a firesafe lockbox. I don’t have any eventuality for if the firesafe goes at the same time as online failsafes, but I feel like the best approach for those kinds of situations is nihilism.

I spent extensive time evaluating this problem, and tried a whole bunch of different things: Nextcloud, Resilio, iCloud, etc etc etc. Honestly? Just using Google Photos is probably the best bet for most folks, whether you’re on iOS or somet

Ah, right, Windows, forgot about that one! So, Windows you’re pretty much always going to have to install something anyway. For almost all of the BSDs, Linux distros, Solaris, AIX, HPUX, countless others, you’re going to have both bash and

Ok…but bash is waaayy more common. I could see this if you were making an argument about Perl, since it’s probably pretty close to parity with bash in terms of pre-existing in most environments…but python? No way!

But doesn’t Windows 10 ship with device encryption? Ie full disk encryption? I thought that’s exactly what this was, which is what I’m not understanding. How can you see data if the device is encrypted?

I don’t understand. What’s the point of having an encrypted disk if it can be decrypted by any old USB-loaded OS?

I pay over $100/mo for 5 Mbps up-speeds. There are literally no other ISPs that will offer me anything different. So, I use a VPS. Turns out, that’s not only better bandwidth performance, it’s also cheaper than the electricity from sel

Yes, and also I think also because it is possible for it to be a self-isolated system; you don’t need as much greater context of the world to make sense of its rules.

You’ve just reminded me of a question I had on a driver’s test many years ago. The free-response question was something like: “What is the single most important thing you can do to improve your safety as a driver?” I answered: “Always drive

It may sound like I’m being snarky, but I’m not: Aren’t users / social engineering make up the actual majority of real-world vulnerabilities, and pose the most prevalent extant threat in the entire software ecosystem?

Interesting take! The US is a very big place, closer to the European Union than it is generally portrayed. And, within the US, each city is its own complex ecosystem (as all cities are). In Baltimore, class boundaries and class-related issu

I have a feeling it’s not to appear “cool,” but because when you’re writing code there is a tendency to prefer higher density. Why? Because higher density makes it easier to see the entirety of a context: more code on the screen makes it

I love stuff like this. You’ve basically made the world a better place. Btw didn’t notice if it can render them horizontally as well as per tradition?

I thought Half-Life: Alyx was basically our HL3? It certainly got critical reviews/scores suggesting it deserves its moniker of Half-Life.

Well sure, definitely. But at any prize that’s enough to be a sole reason for a person to enter a hackathon, imho that’s either 1) a poorly designed hackathon or 2) a really ugly way for a company to fund R&D. I’ve never participated in

I use and love nodejs daily, and I think I can speak to some of the stupid. A lot (but not all) has to do with ecosystem. Some of the stupid in node just comes from the fact that there's still a lot of reinventing the wheel, and doing
