How can we make programs this slow in 2025 when people have ssd and nvme drives, people have 12-24-64 threads in the cpus, memory that is lightning fast and still we wait for crap to load? How is it that noone creates pushback on applicatio

And another example, AI upscaling the C64 version Dragons Lair will not turn it into the amiga version, or the laserdisc version. ;)

I think I would not. When you move from 160x200 with few colors to 4k with 16M colors it places new demands on the graphics which I don't think this solution would give you. It could, but would probably require tons of people to make i

If you can get an Edgerouter Lite 3 it will run fine( ) on that, serial console, three gig ports, fanless and not-x86 and probably available for cheap if you look at used hw sites. ) as far as its hw goes, that is. Will not be competing in

I think it was far less special that advertized, so it was probably a stripped Solaris that ran a JRE hoping noone would notice. Dog slow they were at least so from my viewpoint, there was nothing magic about those boxes at all.

This even applies to remove-viewing software that wants to "follow" the resolution changes, flipping your remote window size around a lot. Super annoying.

I think so, as in "make sure all other stuff has run before calling the NOP finished". Otherwise, it would just skip past it and it would have no effect if placed in a loop, so it would be eating memory for no use at all.

I think for certs, you are not better of paying $5 for the cert, than paying nothing to get an LE cert. It is already "subsidized" into cheapness, and the $5 company will bug you with ads for EV certs and whatnot in order to make

It's the power converters that break down from what I've heard, not the LED themselves. So light bulb companies can make the 230V -> 1.5V conversion brittle and have you rebuy lights over and over "as designed".

You could use bcachefs on the OSD drives, but you can also just point the WAL/DB of the OSD to a partition on the ssd and have the data on hdd. You don't have to tier pools to get help with small writes/metadata using ssds.

No, that is likely not true. There are platforms today for which C-based tmux runs but Rust never will. It's not that we are simply waiting for the backport of Rust to magically appear for them, it's quite a certainty that it will

I seem to recall amiga midi getting a bit of critique (at least when used with Bars and Pipes) for adding latency when doing MIDI. For hobbyists, this probably wasn't a showstopper, but for serious use it would be lots more important.

I think anyone that can avoid this 'MS tax' on computers should try it, just stating that last time it "worked" in 1999, it stopped working really really fast.

From and older perspective, we used to find things like "having 378238 drivers for matrix and line printers noone uses", so while they may not eat cpu resources and possibly zero ram too, every user had to install them and only 0.
