If it makes you feel any better, I did the hiring manager thing for 2 years before deciding I couldn't stand it, and the average age of my team was 55. I did my bit to not exacerbate this situation. My fervent goal is to stay an IC th

It should depend on that, and perhaps to some degree it does. But in even the best case scenario, where every few years was brand new knowledge, you've still put the obstacle in your path of convincing new hiring managers of that wh

You're conflating recognizing reality with defending a given hiring practice. I've responded to other comments with more detail.

I said nothing about what is fair, or what should be. I'm describing what is . Programmers jump jobs every 2-4 years (myself included) because it's the best way to reliably get good pay increases, and because staying more than

After a thousand threads on why tech hiring is hard, I don't think I need to re-hash that getting signal from noise is complex and imperfect. Out of the two signals, "this person was successful at 8 different companies" vers

You post this all the time. You did 27 years at one single company, as you point out so proudly and often. After a stint like that, anyone would be unhireable. It isn't your age, as so many others on this chain have pointed out. You

The issue you usually run into is that the alternative isn't breeding for health or happiness, it's breeding for some arbitrary "standard" of aesthetics. It results in substantially less healthy animals (see: bulldog, G

Breeds have absolutely vanished in the past(1). It takes an awful lot of effort to breed dogs and if there isn't money in it most breeders won't. Without the main financial incentive it's not crazy to think that within a hu

It's no different than mourning the old 90's internet or music from a certain era. A thing gp loves about the world will diminish drastically because it's no longer viable, and they're going to miss it when it's go

Just because this one was a lab leak doesn't mean the next one has to be. I think origin would be worth knowing just for the historical record, but ultimately it doesn't matter in the slightest.

I understand the point you meant to make, but to be honest I've always found it horrifying whenever I have to sit in the DMV and see who all they allow to pilot steel missiles around. Our "licensing" for drivers in the US is

This just isn't true. Find me any data that any level of performance results in better compensation than changing jobs every 2-4 years and I'd be willing to at least consider the idea, but it just doesn't exist.

I like this a lot. People underestimate coming off as a bit memorable and likeable, even in technical interviews. If you don't mind I'll probably use something very similar if I ever wind up in that situation.
