You know, this actually sounds like a blast. I'm historically very much a loner, but even I have limits and lately I've been hitting them. I'm gonna pitch this idea to my partner. Thanks for sharing it.

The challenge I, and I think many others, run into with this is that there's almost never anything I "want". I spend so much time racking my brain for what to build I never start. Having a nice curated problem put in front o

I'll add another data point of strongly preferring it. Check in early so you can board early so you can get a good seat. I'm fairly punctual and this system rewards me for that without needing to open my wallet, so I'm a fa

This was the book that kick-started me along to becoming a software engineer. Fantastic book and I can't recommend it enough.

I suspect that no job lends itself to boundaries well, and that a healthy willingness to enforce them is going to be necessary regardless.

Another comment here mentioned the on the job steps you can take, and that mirrors my experience. I also enrolled in Georgia Tech's OMSCS after a year or so of self study. About 1 year in I took a role using Python for network topology

This hit all the same high notes I was feeling when I quit Data Science to become a software engineer. It's an infinitely better gig and I encourage all my colleagues with enough chops to make the same switch.

I find great enjoyment and personal satisfaction in raising my child, and building a life together with my wife. It's difficult to articulate, but I usually phrase it as something along these lines. * As a child, relatively small thing

I think this is an incredibly uncharitable take. I have a wife and kid. I have more to lose, sure, but I also have lots to gain. My friends and family who are single and childless have less of both (according to them, I'm not trying

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted. I think you're probably off the mark, but these are very reasonable and falsifiable predictions and this is what most of this comment chain should be.

I'm curious and would love to take a look. Any chance any of that code is available somewhere? My c++, little that I write, mostly looks like C and I'd love to learn something new.

I recently crammed a bunch on DNS for an interview, and I can recommend the cloudflare blogs on that topic as being quite good.

Amos' writing style is just so incredibly good. I don't know anyone else doing these very long-form, conversational style articles. Plus, you know, just an awesome dev who knows his stuff. Huge fan.

Perhaps the shareholders' feelings are less important than the financial and emotional security of the employees and their families? Your priorities seem very, very backwards to me.

The lecture videos and syllabi are up on the gatech websites for each class, but the project materials and such are not publicly available as far as I'm aware.

If you haven't heard of Georgia Tech's OMSCS, give it a look. There are some excellent systems courses available. https://omscs.gatech.edu/specialization-computing-systems

You don't, really. You can (usually) change the DNS resolver your provided router uses to an internal IP, then statically assign that IP to your pi-hole. It's about 5 minutes in a GUI web panel, give or take the googling to find

This falls right in line with the recent "hardware offload for all" article posted on HN, and the talks around Hubris that Bryan Cantrill has given. It's an exciting time for computing, I think. I've often lamented that

Well this particular example is a US website. The relevant (inadequate) legal framework for handling the situation is US Federal law, which ideally Cloudflare would have had to reference to determine whichever outcome should have happened

I do think, if there was competent legal governance in this space, that's the conclusion they would have reached. I think you understand my larger point, regardless.

There were no good choices for Cloudflare here, and everyone across the internet who jams their fingers in their ears and shouts their position repeatedly is just contributing to the problem. Private companies should not be the de facto mod

I work on a golang team and we're all VSCode. But most of us started in another language that is more typically VSCode-friendly, so maybe that's it?
