They almost certainly don't mean "punched in the stomach hard enough to lose your breath for a moment", but rather "exercise (e.g. run) hard enough to lose your breath for a moment"

I'm sure there aren't many engineers at Microsoft who wouldn't love to throw out the whole Windows paradigm and build something new and better from scratch. They kinda did. When Windows 3.1 was a hit, the server OS was Windows NT ( http:

Yep, it's easier to be "passionate" about something when you don't do it 40+ hours per week. Also, I enjoy programming, I have a programming job. I wish my job had more actual programming in it. When it's a job you can't just get to do the

Not so plausible to me, considering that the old system was in C#.

I don't know much, but for high-frequency trading, fast is never fast enough. response times are measured in microseconds. http://richg74.wordpress.com/2010/10/25/speedy-new-lse-tradi... http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Linux-boost

True enough. If the statement turns out to be not entirely correct, that would be news. I suspect that if there is any F# code, it's in a 3rd party system that talks to the stock exchange. There are lots of those due to the nature of an exc

I don't believe it at all. Mainly because of the public statements that the new LSE trading system was written in C++. On the other hand, it has to integrate with lots of enternal trading systems, one of which could easily be written in F#.

They have publicly stated that the system is written in C++ on Suse Linux. http://www.computerworlduk.com/news/open-source/3260727/lond...

I don't think that "linux is to blame" or even that any choice of programming languages or other tools are to blame. It's a large system with extra-ordinarily tight performance requirements, and a lot of integration with external systems, a

My employer prefers to hire coders who work on open source software. They say that they have done the math and has found that it has a significant correlation with the person being worth hiring. Means that they're genuinely keen on coding

The data suggests to me that "mental" has at least two, narrower peaks - the Mathematician/Physicist peak (maths are theroetical physics are quite similar in practice) is quite distinct from the Novelist's peak, and that therefor they exerc

It looks like there's two directions for a language's type system to go: 1) strict typing, but with lots of constructs (e.g. inheritance, interfaces, generics, extension methods) to work around that strictness so that you can do what you wa

I take the point about "Java's designers were consciously designing a product for people not as smart as them." But, consider the reverse - The C++ spec always seemed to as if the language designers were showing off - competing to add fatur

That would be legal in C# 3.5 or later. Though technically it's not that "array of numbers" is a class, but that array of T implements the interface IEnumerable<T>, and Sum() is extension method defined for IEnumerable<int>
