"Synth mastery" is not just mathematical or psychoacoustics... let's add some things: Dave was routinely pushing the envelope when it came to these boundaries but many times it was too ahead of its time. The ARTISTS never rea

It depends on the team and the way things are organized I guess. I've only worked at a small company where we are all obsessed and I couldn't imagine anyone coming onto the team without a similar level of enthusiasm and excitement

It isn't easy carrying the torch of a legend but standing on the shoulders of giants is how we move things forward as a species. I'm confident I can speak for the company when I say we are doing our best to keep his legacy going.

It's a REALLY hard business. Roger Linn repeatedly tells people that the easiest way to lose money is to build a synthesizer and he's certainly right. Then again, I ignored that advice. I think we're all just a bit crazy and

The difference is people in our industry are typically already taking a huge pay cut. People shuffle in and out but usually they end up back in the audio industry because... well... it's freaking awesome. How many other places can you

If you give someone a take home 4 hour assignment you better be paying contracting rates. I have been in situations where someone gives an assignment of a problem they are actively working on. I'm not working for free.

I’m sorry don’t have the emotional energy to comment in depth or correct some of the misconceptions about analog synths or the electronic music world or any of that right now. Tried for a bit but having trouble focusing If HN is interested

Good example we can explore! So in this case there are a lot of differences: Comparing TE with Yamaha is a pretty massive difference in size of engineering teams and overall engineering knowledge. In the 80s the products, while definitely c

As above, not only do I do this for a living but in the specific sub-industry this product is made for, which means in this particular case I know quite a bit. Very seldom do I think I know better but in this case I have industry specific k

Component cost increases due to the pandemic and supply chain issues easily increased the price by 25-30% in our industry due to several factors outside of the norm, like some single source parts most companies relied on with factory proble

I'm just trying to give you perspective Nearly every complex instrument still has critical bugs after 10 years because development moves on after 4-5 years. Hardware bugs are != software bugs in terms of complexity because the debuggin

Small sample size bias Small companies don't have the same QC that a large corporation does, you'll never get the same consistency across products at the early stages of a company. Unfair to compare against that. You should defini

I have used TE products on occasion and looked into them deeply from a bunch of engineering perspectives. Compared to other products in a similar price point and form factor the likelihood of a problem is far lower. When you reduce the size

Pop music isn't meant to withstand the test of time. Stop treating it as such. Enjoy what does. Lots of stuff from this decade will. If you can't find the stuff you enjoy why bother with modern pop at all?

Exceed expectations. Take this to an extreme. If they expect you to write a program, do it a little cleaner than they expect. Figure out what metrics matter to your team beyond getting the product out and show you can bring value beyond you
