Not actually true. H2 is found naturally, although we don't have an good assessment how much exists or whether there are significant deposits.

Fuel cells are too heavy, at least for the time being. Other than biofuels or synfuels, there's basically no alternatives. Aviation companies will have to pick one of those fuels.

Battery energy density hasn't moved much at all. At best, we're at around 270-280 Wh/kg, and that requires a huge departure from our early understanding of battery safety. The early BEVs were relatively safe, even in a severe

Cost is just the standard economies of scale. Going from MWh of battery storage to GWh of battery storage will produce those cost reductions. Li-Po batteries had had 20C discharge rates for many years. Nothing is really unexpected or breaki

At some point you just accept that hydrogen is a battery technology with the highest possible energy density and give up on silly in-between ideas.

To be fair, hydrogen is one of those "mythical" power sources. It just happens to be the one that is becoming viable in the short-term and is not dependent on some future discovery.

None of it has produced anything or has produced minimal gains. Seriously, look at the rate of actual improvement. Li-NCA existed more than a decade ago. Since then the best batteries have barely gotten better. Peak energy density has moved

You need a lot of metal, especially if you want a big battery. Realistically we're not going to see batteries much cheaper than what we have now. Hydrogen is likely to be cost of green energy plus some additional cost factor. So if sol

I see batteries not getting much cheaper at all, and likely hitting some plateau in cost reductions. It wouldn't surprise me if it is followed by cost increases as demands for sustainable production and recyclability increase. Hydrogen

Batteries are likely reaching the end of their progress. Chances are there are no meaningful improvements left in batteries without some kind of major breakthrough.

All "profits" come from regulatory credits. Even then, there's plenty of aggressive accounting going on. It's arguable Tesla has never been profitable and still isn't.

Agreed. Nearly every AI startup or idea has disappointed or failed. We’re spending the equivalent of billions of dollars on something dumber than a rat in most cases.

Synfuels are not a drop-in replacement. Jet-A has exacting standards, and it would be a serious chemistry challenge for synfuels to match Jet-A exactly. Most likely it would be possible but very costly. Most of that stuff is engineering sup

Synfuels are made using H2 and CO2. In practice, they're just H2 with more steps. So while you can use them, it ends up being a trade-off between cost and how much you really need synfuels.

You should at least bring up the story of Max Planck in the late 1800s. He was basically told not to enter physics, because supposedly nearly all of physics has already been discovery. We know what came next in physics. We don't know t

The problem you're missing is cost of production: A hydrogen car fundamentally should cost no more than gasoline powered car, and will have a similar range. With batteries, you'll always be limited in range to some extend, and cos

It's a long shot because it's a bad idea. It's fundamentally no different than pumped hydro, but much more complicated. I don't think there's any chance such ideas can work out.
