Early CRTs had a rather low refresh rate, so having only as little of the screen light up as needed makes sense to make the flicker less noticable. Then came 70+ Hz CRTs and LCDs… Maybe somebody else can explain why the dark backgrounds are

Of course ,as long as all Swiss German speakers continue to learn Standard German in school and use it for writing, their dialect will not drift too far away. Also, a person from Northern Germany might find some dialects in the Netherlands
