This was one of the most surreal and irritating posts I’ve ever come across on hacker news. Landing on a page that just says “ This site is formatted for viewing in 1024 x 768 or higher resolution.” Followed by “ I am sickened by the recent

The CEO and upper management do loads to steer the ship. If all they care about is enriching themselves, they will likely struggle to find developers who are in it for the passion. Look at Google. It is a late-stage, post-IPO business that’

I’m surprised to see such irrelevant and sensationalized information being pushed to the top of the comment section of a hn post. Does a crime that happened 34 years ago, and a sentence served for said crime, hold any at all relevance to th

As someone who knows a handful of devs and hear their near daily grievances of google, it seems like the culture over there has died and it’s just a bog standard Big Corp(tm) now. By how they describe it, a lot of the people, (but not all o

Are you equally pedantic on the colloquial classification of nuts when a large portion of the "nuts" we eat are actually drupes? Or fruit vs vegetable classifications? Perhaps language is a tool used to convey meanings and ideas i

What are the long term ramifications of Twitter outrage circles canceling people whose ideas don’t exactly align with the mob? I used to think this trend would fizzle off, or that institutions would learn to ignore a vocal minority, but it

Not sure if this is a joke or not, but that estimated capacity it seems like it would be 20x less MW than if all the reactors destined for that site were finished. I didn’t do the calculations but I wouldn’t be surprised if the lifetime of

I read it as “one-dollar” and assume most people would read it the same. Although I’d prefer if writing rules put the $ after the number; eg 1$.

I’ve got to second this, as I built a scraper with basic python for the exact same thing. Over time I’ve used it for other sites and it needed only basic changes to get it to work.

I’d imagine it’s from lack of use in daily writing, combined with a lack of a ubiquitous context-aware spell checker. I make similar mistakes quite often

While I agree that gas stoves put out more VOCs than most people would imagine, the fact that humans have been cooking inside on either wood or gas stoves for many hundreds of years, gives testament to the idea that it can’t really be /

I feel like USB-C is cursed enough on its own. The sheer number of times I’ve had to explain to family members why just because the two USB-C ports on a laptop look the same, doesn’t mean they work the same.

It's amazing how much security people and companies are willing to give up for a smidge of convenience. Properly deployed CCTV has little worry of hackers since, hence it's name, it is closed-circuit.

Forever benchmarking on old hardware is counterintuitive to forward progress. As much as I love my T400, I know someday, probably sooner rather than later, it won’t be suited to daily use.

I'm not convinced either. I don't think I'll see a 100% FSD vehicle in my lifetime, at least the ones depicted in futuristic renderings without steering wheels. Case in point, how does a FSD vehicle deal with extremely heavy

That’s a very bleak worldview. If something doesn’t serve an immediate, obvious purpose, it is a waste and a drain on resources.
