A couple years after I graduated college, I came across the 1972 movie of Macbeth . The experience was so drastically different from reading it in high school that it seemed like a completely different play. Suddenly, it all made sense now

> Do you know how much it costs to operate a helicopter Do you know how easy and cheap it is to make gunpowder? I was making black powder rockets from grocery store ingredients when I was 12.

Reminds me of the movie I saw this weekend with the homeless guy who said he used to be a software developer at Apple, but there were some "disciplinary issues."

In the US, IIRC, you had to be a member of the Coast Guard. Isn't it the same in Canada?

Generating "engagement" by making ridiculously outlandish statements has gotten so common that it's impossible to distinguish them from people who are just hopelessly naive.

> software is robust/rock solid but the code is essentially unreadable I come across this fairly frequently. I think it's because the code has simply been tested into submission. So it works for that particular set of use cases

Wasn't there a period when the insane China tariffs started that the Chinese manufacturers of Western luxury goods threw the veil off and started selling them direct at much lower prices?

Why on earth would anyone be surprised that this market exists? I can understand being surprised that it's possible to deliver those items at the stated price, but the market's always been there.

Burger King has a promotion going where if they screw up your Whopper, you get an extra one for free. My wife laughs at me because every time I see that commercial, I point out that if our local BK (now out of business! surprise!) had to do

The App irritates the living f** out of me. I live about 10 miles outside town and it assures me that when I'm two minutes away, they will start making my order. That has never happened. I either have to click the "I'm here n

At my first job, our entire order-entry and inventory management system was written in QBASIC. I wish I had the source to try it out with this. I know someone who might, if we could figure out how to get it off a DOS 5.25" floppy!

Nope. Like people working in all sorts of safety-critical jobs around the world, we exercise care and (hopefully good) judgement. I always find it interesting that everyone outside the industry focuses on the downside and completely ignores

And on Saturday, I bought a package of four 1/3 lb burger patties (ground chuck) for $7.99 and a package of burger buns for under $2 at a gas station. Kwik-Trip FTW. That price depends a lot on where you live and shop.
