Yes, I do think this could be worked out - the packaging infrastructure we have today is really powerful and could be built upon. No reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater, I just wanted to illustrate some of the obvious drawbacks

You are right, the same argument can be made, and often it should be made. As an example, a lot of people are pissed off that they can no longer fix their cars themselves because of black-box designs and software restrictions. The ultimate

If I don't like the license you use, I don't. Except when I have no choice, which has unfortunately often been the case due to natural monopolies or social pressure. A decade ago, that problem was Microsoft. Today it is becoming SaaS in

I do this at http://pagekite.net - I build both RPMs and DEBs and host my own repos. This works fine for the most part and is relatively easy for technical users to take advantage of. It was a bit of work to get it working (and my packa

You're joking, right? Free Software is not about slavish compliance with licensing terms or inventing shiny new technology for technology's sake (that movement is called Open Source). Free Software is about having the freedom to control y

It depends on the project really, centralization has many advantages. I just thought being able to go fully distributed was a neat hack.

That is exactly the point! :-) Dvcs systems have that potential, but people still generally fall back to using a central repo for sharing, because the network gets in the way of direct push/pull. The point of the article is to show one way

Only if you create accounts and your workstations can reach each-other somehow. That is more effort and won't work at all if the workstation is behind a firewall on some remote network.

I'd rather symlink it. :-) Of course, I'd wager not very many of us work all the time on web-visible machines, which is why adding PageKite changes things - I'm sharing repos off my laptop now.

I've been to quite a few conferences, speaking about my startup's software ( http://pagekite.net ). In my case, since we release our core product as Free Software and are very aligned with the decentralization and "cloud backlash" movement

That looks pretty neat. Is it just a bonjour enabled web interface, or does it do other stuff? If it's mostly a web UI, you may be able to expose that using PageKite too, for sharing over the Internets: pagekite.py localhost:9331 bananajo

I just discovered this trick yesterday, and thought it was so awesome I had to write about it. Truly decentralized code sharing! :-)

A solution may be to provide a template, where developers can list explicitly the activities they do not support. You'd still be imposing your morals and beliefs on others, but at least it could be less ambiguous. This would not be a "free

Free Software is not a gift. That is where you go wrong. Just because you want it to be does not make it so. Free Software, as advocated by the FSF and many others, is an attempt to remedy the ethical problems posed by closed source softw

Fair 'nuff. I think the Google Alumni organization tries to keep track of some things like that, but I have no idea how successful they are. I've never bothered telling them what I am up to. :-P

Exactly! This is actually why I am in no real hurry to look for VC-type investment. Taking VC money at least appears to eliminate the "middle ground" for the business, one becomes obligated to shoot for big money or go bust trying. It took

Wait, what? It sounds like you are defining success or failure solely in terms of whether there is a big-money exit or not. That seems so... sad. What ever happened to "provides employment" and "provides value to its customers"? Anyway,

If you are using write(2)/read(2) on a local file, is there any other buffer that comes into play aside from the memory in buffer cache itself? You are correct that obviously we don't really know when the data will hit disk, but that doesn'

Mmap just gives an alternate API - access the file contents as a memory buffer, not a file. Turns out the underlying mechanism is the same, and if you are happy with fseek(), read() and write(), you don't really need mmap at all.

If minecraft clients can be configured to use HTTP proxies, you should be able to expose a minecraft server using PageKite; PageKite can handle arbitrary TCP streams, as long as the client knows how to initialize the connection with an HTTP
