My vote's on jQuery, but whatever you do, do it unobtrusively (one reference: http://simonwillison.net/static/2008/xtech/ ). It's easy if you do it from the start, and there's a real savings in maintenance costs.

Because ignoring them doesn't work. If you don't fight to keep things on-topic, you'll just end up with another Reddit in a few months.

I work 11 AM to 11:30 if the projects are uninteresting. I work 7 AM around the clock to 2 PM if the project is good.

You do web dev, you could also consider getting into a JS library. And I recommend everyone who works in a team read http://producingoss.com/ -- its insights aren't just good for open source code.

I run a couple dozen Django apps in production. The admin interface is solid, we've only managed to find two or three oddities, mostly related to many-to-many associations. We haven't done much customization, but what we've done has worked

Don't know why this is getting downvoted -- I read and enjoyed this books a lot recently. I'm finding this to be a great thread for resources to satisfy the curiosity about probability and statistics that they left me with.

At the first (bad) workplace that certainly wasn't the case. The place had high ceilings, so I could hear the sales and support guys who sat 20m away. At my current job, yeah, people generally speak in hushed tones or grab a conference/brea

I find it's only possible when I really like what I'm working on. If I do, the rest of the world ceases to exist. I could probably work in the middle of a construction or demolition site for all it would matter. If I don't like my coworkers

Actually, I know Arrington was interested in Rails as early as July 2006. We had a serious conversation about using it for the first version of the job board. I argued for PHP and we settled on it -- at the time, Rails deployment was a PITA

I built (the first incarnation of) the TechCrunch job board in the summer of 2006. I started at Cambrian House a month later (worked there about 9 months) and tried to introduce Arrington to Cambrian House's CEO to get some coverage. Nothin

The point of bots is that they don't have to be efficient, just marginally effective and able to run with limited or no supervision. The solution to inefficient bots is easy: create more instances.

I use Django at the Washington Post to develop interactive databases and respond to breaking news. Most of the codebase was written by Adrian Holovaty, a creator of Django, and it's by far the best codebase I've ever inherited. The admin in

Flickr is worth 4 billion because he guessed at its freemium conversion rate and the introduction of advertising, then ran it through a multiplier chosen by a guy banned for life by the SEC? At the least, this is unpersuasive.

If you started from GPL code, what you produce is a derivative work and must always stay GPL. It does not matter how much you simplify, change, fix, improve, or extend: if you start from GPL you have to stay GPL.

OK, so let's say Yanik has no costs at all -- he gets to take that entire $300,000 and put it right in his own pocket. Maybe lumber and concrete just fall out of the sky for him, and people work for him free because he's such a nice guy who

Easiest way to test this would give the class 'user' to links to users. Folks could tweak their browser's CSS with a.user { display: none; } real easy.
