I have been running Windows 8 (RTM version) on my laptop for two weeks (as I am a MSDN subscriber, thanks to BizSpark). The Metro interface is cute but after a while, I am completely back to the Desktop environment. To my surprise, it is e

You gotta fix your website (I'm using Chrome, and the background image took forever to load, and for the longest time I was puzzled by the small window to the right with some text). Not leaving a very good impression... Plus $29?

Marissa Mayer: "it was a reasonably easy decision" ... This is probably what went through her mind... If Larry can lead Google, and I being the smarter one of the two ... Despite all her flaws, she may actually succeed at Yahoo! just to pro

This algorithm is likely very slow. In fact, the authors didn't mention runtime at all.

I don't think this is entirely correct. If you write in Native (C/C++) then true, it won't run on WP7. But if you write in C#/Xaml you could have targeted your app to WP7 and I believe it will run on both WP7 and WP8 -- of course this will

It doesn't hurt to do that. Be frank about it. If done right they might even see this as a positive.

Definitely. Not even "putting in a large number so I'll get whatever market clearing price". At $4,000 Facebook will be worth $10T.

Your bottomline is probably somewhere X months of equity, where 3.5 < X < 11. Why don't you (politely) email them that you are a reasonable person and believe it fairness. You don't expect full cliff vesting per agreement, but a 3.5

The reasoning is very poor. I thought he was going to say something along the line of portability. Nope. It was about exception. Granted, exception is problematic. I don't use exception for similar reasons. However, given the nature of this

A nitpick on the title, cuz it annoys me. Why would anyone say "You'll never believe X"? The X in question (95% HTML) is actually not that unusual to begin with. But even if X is mind-blowing, the fact is that the article was written to sho

I think both of you are right. To each his own. I have a few applications that are algorithmically complicated and it is impossible (or very expensive) to implement multiple versions of the same thing on different platforms. Even though the

Your objective C code in iOS can directly call your C++ code. Your C++ code just need to be renamed with extension .mm.

You are right that details are not out. What I said was purely conjecture on the part of WP8. However, given the roadmap, rumors, hints, discussions, the kind of people in charge (Sinofsky, known .Net hater), etc... I am pretty sure that WP

WP8 and Windows 8 are definitely very C++ friendly. I actually think that C++ may be the language to rule them all as the next generation of web application goes beyond what Javascript can handle. Well, that and C# given Miguel's effort. I

I don't like that book. I tried it with my kid (almost 8). The first 3 chapters are okay, but then chapter 4 goes into the discussion about floating points, integer vs. doubles, integer-to-double conversion, arithmetic precision etc. I'd sa

That's right, if I recall correctly. You can't copyright a font. You can rip off an existing font and create a new one that looks strikingly similar, even visually identical. However, if you do that by reverse-engineering the font (e.g. ext

Usually the topic of fair use is rather subjective, and even the four guidelines (roughly: is it transformative? what's the nature of the work, is it for-profit or not? how much of the original is used?) are subject to interpretation. This,

The article mentioned AutoESL, which compiles C, C++, or SystemC to Verilog/VHDL. This allows you to focus on the algorithmic, or behaviorial level. The advantages are plenty, but the main drawback is that it is one more level abstracted aw

This is sadly so true. It's hard to play devil's advocate sometimes because unless you are going for the "conventional wisdom" some people are bound to disagree with you, and disagreement is often expressed in the form of downvotes. Since o
