It's kind of a Victorian writer thing, I think. (Getting more verbose with age, I mean.)

This strikes me as somewhat misinformed. Try reading Michael Neiburg's "Warfare in World History." It's a great ~100 page summary of the history of warfare. Firearms are a very important component. Not all battles were decided by close comb

The people of the Americas had a distinctly different ritual of warfare. Much of the advantage had to do (at least in the beginning) with the natives "honorably" waiting for their opponents to be ready, which for the Europeans involved sett

A queue would be cool, a la instapaper.com, but supported by the browser. I notice most of my tabs are "waiting to be read" things opened from Hacker News.

What about uranium depletion? Never mind how safe we can make it, or how cost-effective... neither of these things matter if we run out, and I can't find a definite, comprehensive study on how long it could last. Projections range from a de

Quicksilver responds much faster than Spotlight does, even when Spotlight has "indexed" the disk. I only use Quicksilver for launching applications (i.e. I don't do anything even slightly advanced with it) but it's still satisfying because

"Everyone’s identity is socially created: it’s through your relationships that you understand yourself as a mother or a father, a teacher or an accountant, a hero or a villain." This drew my attention in particular. Is this true for all peo

This article was not of the caliber I expect at HN. Much more useful would be recommendations for cheap, robust home firewall options that surpass the average consumer-grade without being ridiculously expensive.

Er, isn't this a valid concern? I don't own an iPhone, so I don't REALLY know what I'm talking about here, but as a college student, I know quite a few people with iPhones who pirate ALL of their applications. I get the impression that they

Judging by the rest of Mr. Marinich's content, I'd be surprised if you're very far off the mark. Here's what I found particularly ironic: most of the online stuff of his I read (well, skimmed) was pretty negative, hostile and generally invo

I, for one, do not notice the number of votes next to a story. As long as it's in the top 150, if it looks interesting, I'll read it, if not, I'll skip it.

It's not a different version... it's the same thing on the same site. Saying it's a different version is like pointing at a page in which an image is embedded and linking to the image itself and saying they're different versions.

Better yet, send one of the counselors/advisers an e-mail and ask them about a track you might be interested in. Or, e-mail a professor and ask them. Or both.

This is all great advice that I, as a CS undergrad, am going to take to heart. Something along a similar vein that bubbled up on HN a long while ago is the Programmer Competency Matrix: http://www.indiangeek.net/wp-content/uploads/Programm

http://www.economist.com/ and http://seedmagazine.com/ have great reputations... at least in my book. They have a very high ratio of signal to noise, in my opinion. I often enjoy http://www.physorg.com/ , though it's frequently a littl

Tuition-free tufts? I'd jump at it. Anything close to Boston would be pretty cool. I hear there's a pretty strong hacker scene there... but I've never been there myself.

I can't fathom any use for this, but it looks incredibly cool. I can intuitively grasp what the code must look like - detecting window size and positioning - but it still looks impressive once it's implemented.
