I would only add that an organic (accidentally created) hash collision in Git will take an extreme amount of time. However, even today you can download the two PDFs from https://shattered.io/ , put them both in your Git repo

Yes, but that's very little improvement over the generic 2^128 attack - trying random messages until one happens to match the target hash. The attack quoted by Wikipedia achieves only 4.6 bits of speedup (note that it's 2^123.4, n

You can find this in any introduction to cryptography textbook/course. "Generic attack" is a common term for "just use brute force" [1]. It's called "generic" because it works regardless of the implem

Security is typically measured in bits. But yes you're right, maybe I should have written "square as difficult" to be more clear :)

Pre-image is approximately "twice as difficult" as a collision. A generic attack on, say, a 256 bit long hash function takes 2^128 time to find a collision, but 2^256 time to find a preimage. And like you say, this also shows up i

SHA-2, including SHA-256, is constructed using a Davies–Meyer compression function. That compression function starts with a block cipher - so an object like AES, but with wider keys and wider block size. For SHA-2 this block cipher is calle

I think that we've know that for a very, very long time: cellulose, i.e. wood or paper, is an example.

US needs to spend a certain amount of money to deter opponents. One of the major opponents is Russia. By spending a small fraction of the deterrence money for example on cheap 155mm shells instead of on for example high tech F-22s in Alaska

It still adds entropy. You're thinking of uniform entropy vs just entropy, but the former is easy-ish to produce from the latter, for example by using hash functions. Also, it's obviously a stunt - you are probably much better off

They're not contradictory - markets are both short term and long term inefficient. Or at least they had been up to this point. Note though that in both cases there's a rather convincing story that explains where the edge is coming

My pet peeve in English terminology is the very word "computer". It should have always been called something like "the mathematical machine", computation is just one of them! The French l'ordinateur is much better.

What a psychopath. Also, why isn't anyone suggesting suing the employer? Your contract is with the employer, not the mentally ill IT guy. And obviously anyone who works for the employer shouldn't be trusted here (luckily the new I

This. Clear Air Turbulence can strike at any time, and you - as in your body - can get seriously damaged even with moderate turbulence. Few people have ever seen severe or extreme turbulence, including the flight crews, but that can happen

It's very easy to get to slightly below 0g by just pushing on the stick or yoke, and that would be enough to cause what the passengers describe here. You could even get well below 0g. Almost all turbulence of the sort that you can expe

Doesn't the weirdness come from the fact that this structure is commutative, but not associative? I know of only one other structure of this type, namely floating point numbers. For those that don't remember definitions: (a+b) = (

Case in point would be modern gliders (sailplanes). One simple parameter that describes their aerodynamic performance is the maximum achievable Lift/Drag ratio, and that dimension-less ratio has climbed from ~30 in the 1960s to as high

Long COVID shares a lot of symptoms with ME/CFS. And yes it has been researched before, but neurological illnesses are usually beyond our knowledge at this point. Additional funding/attention to Long COVID could help with both.
