But they're saying they "were about to push the button". That sounds like they were at least very close to making the final decision. And clearly "aware".

Yes, that's exactly what it sounds like to me. They have "decided" to press the button, but the body hasn't yet followed the instruction. This situation will of course feel weird and unusual, but I don't think it sa

> "They reported that just as they were ‘about to’ push the button, but before they had actually decided to do so" It seems to me it's just a matter of definition. Clearly it was a conscious decision, since they are able t

He would have said that. But he would have been, and was, completely wrong. Surely nobody thinks Skinner explains anything on a deeper level anymore?

> The commonsense view of consciousness tells us that the conscious decision to act precedes and causes the action itself. I don't get it. The effect (the advancing of the slide) doesn't precede the cause (you deciding to advan

Isn't this just trivially true? Obviously remembering past events is very similar to experiencing the present? We didn't even think we were clever when we stated this as teenage existentialists, how could it really be otherwise? I

This type of person is not very representative of the average mac buyer though. So I’m not sure their opinions should be given much weight.

It doesn't take 10000 to become good enough at something to work in it. A couple of hundred hours is often enough. If you want to work as a programmer, management consultant, business developer or similar that is. Becoming first violin

I hope we haven't reached the point where the average person is unable to find the number for common services.

I'm not sure what you mean here, but if your point is that the average twitter user probably doesn't read real literature then I'd agree.

I agree that it's very poorly written. The heading is especially confusing, it took me a long time to understand that "SerpAPI" was the search term, not a Google service. It is also the name of the company he's promoting

I think you miss the point. Trite as it may be, it's not about owing your parents anything, it's about having little time left to spend with them, which is awful if you love them. If you don't want to see them this tweet is n

There is a difference between optimising engagement by padding a trivial one sentence story, and writing good literature. Sahil Bloom is not Henry James.

It’s only a novelty in the US. In other rich countries where people don’t have a car fetish it’s just the most practical and comfortable way to get to work. Obviously if you need to tow something you can’t use the metro, but that’s a very r

Fixed wing aircraft are of course much more efficient than helicopters, so the best combo is really a vtol, that has fixed wings but can land vertically.

Apart from helicopters for well off finance people and travellers to Monaco landing with their private jets at Nice, there is one example of this kind of thing already: the sea plane from Copenhagen to Aarhus. The boarding point is within w

You're describing tradition air travel. The point is to modernise this, with smaller planes that take off often, closer to you. With little need for check-in etc. Hard to see use cases except for the wealthy.

That is a solved puzzle, public transport is not a new concept, most city dwellers outside of the US rely on it. From the passenger point of view, you simply plan your travel if the train only comes once an hour. Nobody arrives at random to

You are right about Musk's silly tunnels, but VTOL is much better than helicopters. They combine the convenient landing and taking off of helicopters with the fuel economy of fixed wing flight, i.e. airplanes. If it can be made electri
