This does not change your point at all, but I did a double take at "years later" and had to check for myself. It was released in September of last year, so less than 14 months ago.

Which part? For the main lighting technique, most of the magic comes from the artist providing the surface normal components. Then to produce the image under some specified lighting direction, you can do the normal 3D graphics thing: dot

Yes, so then the hard part is actually getting a photo of a completely un-shaded object. Alternatively, you could draw the lighting profiles and then specify the true lighting direction for the given photograph -- this is potentially enoug

Yes! Same goes for pulling eigenvectors out of a data set e.g. for PCA (Principal Components Analysis) -- those form an orthonormal basis. You can even pick a set of random orthogonal vectors of the same number and dimension as your origina

For those wondering why the introduction is so long, I'm betting they realize that the opening Cyan logo animation and music instantly transports many people back to firing up Myst for the first time 20 years ago with a nearly identica

I love BioShock and I desperately want modern games to be as immersive as Riven, but this example image illustrates why it's often obvious that I'm in a flimsy world made of huge polygons (the tracks in the sky) and repeated flat

Very true, and I'm glad that approach is being actively pursued by meta ( http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/551975293/meta-the-most-... ). I also like the Oculus Rift hack that Occipital showed briefly here -

So this is a topic I have thought about for awhile -- I released a 3D scanning app for iPhone nearly 3 years ago (uses the screen as the light source for scanning, called Trimensional) and have had many conversations about when Kinect-style

In fact, the animatronic 1964 GE pavillion show that Asimov is talking about can still be seen today at Disney World. It's called the Carousel of Progress, kind of tucked away behind the Buzz Lightyear ride in tomorrowland and sadly (b

Note that one could also do "area mapping" with nearest neighbor instead of 4-pixel interpolation (if speed is more important than smoothness) to avoid the white dots. This is the most obvious "naive" approach to me -- b
