"Core" memory is resistant to cosmic rays. The state of a core bit will not change when bombarded by radiation in Outer Space. Can't say the same of solid state memory. I worked on core memory computers in the 60's. You had 16K, tape drives

Funny, it wouldn't load in Firefox 3.6.18. Had to go to IE. (Why am I not on FF 7? Aardvark and RoboForm not compatible yet).

There are two methods that helped me learn to code. [1] Copy examples, and tweak them to understand how they work. [2] Program a game or a puzzle. (Here I'm talking about a simple game like Tic-Tac-Toe, not a full-fledged PS3 of XBox game).

Excellent point. The first version of my software was released under Windows 3.1, and had to run acceptably on a 90 MHz PC. It's come a long way since, but the core algorithms are still in use, and they scream on today's gear.

Wouldn't be easier to have a more formal process for saving the source code? Like how real engineers maintain schematics and blueprints? As an alternative, DARPA could prescribe that all the executables they commission come with embedded so

If you click on the "Play" button more than once, it starts multiple, out-of-synch instances of the theme.

My wife has upwards of 15,000 photos. Average JPG file size is 500K (ca. 1200- to 1600-pixel resolution). Anything more is a waste of space and backup time. Only special occasions require more than 1MB file size (or professionals).

The only way to learn programming is to just do it. Start with a small project, a simple problem that you can program. Go through the HTML manual, test every tag and attribute, write a little snippet of HTML, upload it and display it on you

That's a tough one. Psychologically, customers feel that any difficulty they have is due to a defect in your product, and they shouldn't have to pay for your defects. Also, you don't want to charge for Installation problems, and God knows t

The stack includes scratch-pad memory that is temporarily allocated for local variables. The heap is 'permanent' memory that hangs around beyond function calls. Advantages of the stack: you don't have to explicitly ask for it, it's allocate

I wrote my first program in 1965 (FORTRAN). I was hooked and haven't had a dull moment ever since. Then it was Assembler, COBOL, C++, PHP, C#, there's more left for me to learn than when I started. We have been blessed with an exceptionally

Use ion beam deposition ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_beam_deposition ). You can inscribe 20,000 pages on a 5" nickel disk. The data can be read by any civilization that can build an optical microscope. It will last for millennia.

I've been programming for forty-five years. I've always called myself a programmer. "Developers" are people who build subdivisions. Anything else is pretentious. "Engineers" are people who, if they make a mistake, other people die. Engineer
