I recently moved a lot of money out of a "high" interest savings account and mostly into dividend stocks. I managed to get a small payout of around $20 in an ETF and the potential seems so much higher than that of a savings accoun

I'm pretty sure my ability to touch type was influenced by playing Quake 1 and Quake 2. You had to type quickly enough to insult someone and not die. I've met programmers that don't touch type, but I've never met a PC ga

That's brilliant. How much staff do they need to make sure everything is okay? Oh you have a database? Well you need a DBA on this. Security? Who is making sure the application is secure? Where is the security officer? Etc. etc. Many o

This is great. The only immediate UX thing I can think of right now is to make the popup for the loans a little easier to dismiss (like clicking anywhere outside of the lightbox should dismiss it). The only other thing I can think of is bei

Honestly... I hope it was pure realpolitik and long term strategic thinking. The alternative of "spreading freedom" and taking the fight "over there" weaves a narrative that is harder for me to accept.

Hanging around the #swift-lang channel on IRC is very instructive in seeing where the problems of a lot of people that want to learn Swift to start their iOS programming journey. Very rarely do they encounter problems with Swift. They'

I had that gut feeling prior to the stuff released in WWDC this year. If anything they're going for a complete customer experience across their iOS and OS X devices. OS X apps will get storyboards which was an iOS only thing in Xcode.

Living in NOVA it's hard to ignore the issues of DC public schools. A quick search gives this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/05/23/t... And googling "DC public

Atom uses a lot of resources compared to other text editors. IDEs aren't just text editors though. WebStorm is probably slower than people's experience with IDEA because the languages you use on it don't play to an IDE's

The latter because of the runtime magic that it uses in NSManagedObject. Watching the WWDC 2014 talk states that the Swift team added @NSManaged so that it's possible to define models in Swift to be used in Core Data. I also tried wiri

Your definition were clear from people coming from an Objective-C background and after understanding where Swift is coming from after the WWDC talks. But you do realize that the way is calls methods is exactly what makes Swift... well Swift

I disagree. Right now it doesn't seem like a lot of things aren't possible in swift unless there is a LOT of undocumented API. Dynamic method compilation that you would need to make an equivalent of DynamicProxy just doesn't

To add to this: think about the target market for this. It's not the person who knows objective-c and wants to make an Android app. It's not the person who knows Java and wants to make an iOS app. It's the person who already

That looks more like a C function call. If it was an Objective C message the named parameters would make it far more verbose (and readable).

I agree more with the parent on this one. I would actually expect GCD to receive first class language features before regex. There are certain operations like @sync that made their way into objective-c and Swift can use some language featur

Hmm... If I may say so I find that the MVVM pattern in iOS to be very cumbersome when compared to how it can be done in WPF. You essentially need another layer of indirection in iOS where you need none in WPF. That's probably why I per

That's not really heresy considering the existence of Typescript. You're probably right about it needing sponsorship from a big company. Adding type checking to a language is difficult enough, but the tooling around it is what rea

I would argue that Go has it more "baked in." But I'm actually curious as well. Given that Objective-C (and now Swift) have GCD, what language features are needed to bring concurrency up to par with Go? I'm sort of remin

Be careful of using these though. I had an obscure bug using dynamic proxy (castle dynamic proxy2) a while ago in a WPF application. I was proxying to an interface so it created a proxy object in between that in the actual class so it was e
