I'm surprised that noone is blaming the health insurance and opticians for these prices. In France when we need glasses we have to get a presciption and we can choose the glasses at the optician. The thing is that the optician will not

But it is in german, and i believe that a native will not fully understand it if he did not work in the field in germany. I'm french and studied in the UK. I'm sometimes lost when my colleague use french technical terms, i have to

If by low level you mean embedded systems programming, you will definetly need to be proficient in C. The other knowledge depends on the product that you will make. For example I work in the automotive industry, where you need to be interes

It happens in Europe, it's just that you don't hear about it unless it has an impact. For example this summer in Paris, a train station (gare montparnasse) was without electricity for 3 or 4 days because a transformer was on fire.

I discovered TW a few months ago and I decided to use it for our new project at work. We use it to document our SW, one tiddler for each module. So far, it is working great, we can quite easily merge our code and doc because everything is

You chose fpga when you have yo handle bit streams with a precise clock to interface with a hardware, for example a screen or camera. It is very difficult to have a precise timing with a microcontroller unless you have a good one with timer

That's why in iso 26262 you can only use certified compiler and tools. Rust compiler is not certified for example. Sure you can use 3rd party libs, but they must be certified. I agree dith parent: never use copy paste from internet i

Indeed. Anyway i would love to have an open source Simulink-like IDE which generates C code. There is currently not much choices in model based tool, and none are open source.

I do not understand the focus on memory corruption, it is not the major problem in embedded development. In my experience, the vast majority of problems were due to logic failures. Sometimes there was a buffer overflow which was detected in

I know, but i still find them stupid and i will always joke about them preventing death. It is just such a contrast with continental Europe which do not have them.

The next step would be to remove all those Safety signs (e.g. mind the step, look left, drowning risk in front of the sea... ) in the streets and see how many people die due to their absence.

I'm surprised to see Edinburgh, when I graduated in Glasgow 10 years ago, me and my fellow students had to find jobs in the London area. Has the situation changed so much ?

Highway driving is the easiest thing to do. Making a SW which reliably drive in cities is a huge leap forwaed. Then comes the SW safety side: how do you prove to the authorities that the SW is fail safe ? It is a huge challenge.

I worked for one of the supplier you mentionned. The SW really has a huge place in the company and enjoy a good recognition. It has its own method of development and is SW focused. The only drawback are the methodologies which are not agile

They are kind of weak for computer SW compared to USA, but are quite strong in Europe. Their pay packages for SW engineer in the automotive industry is however exremly competitive for Europe. For me it is only nearly on par with switzerlan

Embedded sw automotive engineer here. The article suggest that the german industry may not cope with more computer centric vehicles. I think thats just laughable, it is them who introduced computer controlled engine (motronic) or invented A
