Wasn't the average height much smaller back in the 1880s when the current standard was apparently implemented. In which case, small-handed people might actually be closer to the size for which the current piano was originally intended.

And yet, as simple as this is, four agents is more than you see in most "complex" DSGE models... This looks to me like they're applying deep RL to agent-based modeling. It does seem pretty silly now, but it could be promising

Depends what you see as the point of affirmative action. One of the primary benefits so far as I see it is that it helps make the country's ruling class more reflective of the underlying population. There's a lot of research that

This feels like a reduction to either/or thinking. Sure all history is biased. Everything is biased. But I think you probably believe that some things are more biased than others. The argument above seemed to be that Zinn is more biase

Reminds me of the market for tubes for guitar amplifiers. The "good" tubes are JAN (Joint Army Navy) tubes which were last produced in the 1960s. Someone must have acquired quite a cache of them because they are still turning up a

This conflates social science with the humanities. I agree with respect to the humanities. Less so with respect to social science. People in large groups do in general follow certain trends and we do have decent ways of establishing causati

I've been using NextDNS and really enjoy it. I've found it a lot easier to manage than pihole. Only issue I have is that it doesn't seem to work with the Economist.

Would be nice if it had GPU support so I could use it for deep learning prototyping. I might use Windows instead of Ubuntu then. I can't use macos now that they dropped Nvidia.

I think it all depends on your supervisor and so it can be a real crapshoot. My supervisor was largely absent (saw him two times a year) and unhelpful. I didn't enjoy my PhD although I am glad I learned the material.

The SF board of supervisors has voted on resolutions opposing this bill several times now. If you care about housing and live in SF, take a second look at your supervisor. Their votes may not make a difference with respect to SB50 but they

I struggle a bit with pieces like this because I genuinely am not trying to establish or gauge another person's status when I first meet them. And I really don't think I'm in denial on this. Outside of a business context, it

Conda takes care of a lot of other useful things. For example, it will install cuda and cudnn for you. It will also install mkl. So much easier than pip + many other steps.

RCTs aren't perfect. There's a bunch of problems with them, generalizability being just one. But you know what's even worse? Everything else. Big questions are great and I'd be all for focusing on them if we were capable

I think the solution to this problem is more statistics. In particular, we need a mandatory statistics course at the high school level. The problem is that people are bombarded with "studies" right now claiming to prove stuff and

Agreed. I'm all for experimental economics, but let's not exaggerate the generalizability of a result. Better to see it as a particular form of theory that needs to be backed up empirically in more real world contexts.

The problem with focusing on big questions in economics is that it is very difficult to produce convincing evidence. Humanity is complicated and it is impossible to control for unobservables in cross country studies. The Nobel winners see t

There was a rumor when I was in econ grad school that there was a huge bug in Stata in the nineties affecting standard error calculations, rendering a large fraction of the studies from that time invalid.

Reminds me of how nonplussed has been redefined to mean the opposite of its original meaning. Fine for the language to evolve but we need to stop that sort of thing. It's super confusing now whenever someone uses nonplussed. Which mean
