Is the github sponsors link a 404 for everyone else?

With flatpak, every app would have it's own virtual home to store config files, and for editing documents they can use the portals feature to allow the user to open files without having full filesystem access.

If you know for sure you have been infected with malware then it’s better to reinstall. But on iOS/Android and any other OS with strong boot chain security you can proactively reboot your device periodically and wipe out malware you we

It doesn’t. You get exactly the same protections on Graphine OS with Fdroid. It’s just difficult to retroactively sandbox applications on the desktop because it’s a breaking change. Mobile platforms just got a clean slate to implement a new

This is true, which is why it's extremely hard to create a secure linux desktop today. But things are moving in the right direction, if you use Wayland + Flatpak on a immutable OS with secureboot set up you are in a much better positio

Exploits break out of the sandbox for higher system access. Rebooting flushes them out because the exploits have abused some memory bug to load custom code in the system, but this can not persist a reboot since everything gets cyrptographic

It relies on your software to be properly sandboxed and permissioned. What we have seen is state funded hacking groups can often exploit bugs which break out of sandboxes and embed themselves in the system. But the malicious code only exist

Highly likely, though I still think the Nintendo Switch should have had sounds. Maybe computers should restore a dedicated mute switch or something users can toggle when they are in a quiet space.

If you go with an immutable OS like Fedora Silverblue or Bazzite, every single update is a clean ISO install. And then in your user only install things through Flatpak while checking there aren't dangerous permissions enabled you will

It's more relevant on ios/Android where you can't through normal means install malware at the system level. Linux is moving in this direction with immutable OSs and better secure boot support but there isn't an easy way

If your computer has any kind of secure boot / boot chain attestation stuff going on, like all phones do now, rebooting clears out pretty much all malware. Software bugs can put the system in to a bad state which can be abused by malwa

Maybe. The economics work out better than for game streaming. When I looked in to game streaming it ended up being cheaper to buy over the long term. Though games tend to use 100% of the hardware for hours, and they tend to all be used at t

Liquid Glass was a good step in the right direction imo. A choice to make visual entertainment and beauty a priority over pure function. I feel like what computers really lost was sounds, we used to have so many joyful sounds and background

Tbh in 2024 most were calling these models useless for programming and a scam. It wasn't until this year things really changed. My experience with Qwen 3.6 is it can do things, and it's super impressive it can do things, but it&#x

Even in that case it would make more sense to put the hardware in a server rack shared with everyone rather than inside macbooks. At any rate it makes a stolen backpack or spilled drink a lot less damaging.

I think it still makes sense to wait. Hardware is currently hyper expensive and cloud models are subsidized. Waiting 2 years or so once memory prices have dropped and datacenters start wanting a profit would get you a usable setup that'

The economies of scale gains are lost because you still have a middle man hosting provider who wants to profit too. Over the long term it's always been better to buy than to rent, even if the renting option is technically more efficien

There's the imagery in media with the hero smoking in a leather jacket or whatever. And then there's the reality where all smokers look homeless or otherwise unhinged where everyone avoids walking too close to them.

Australian anti smoking ads were a lot more effective. Showing graphic images and video of diseased foot or someone struggling to talk, coughing up blood. Was working incredibly well up until vapes came along and every school kid had one.

Have to wonder what in todays world could replicate the social aspect of smoking. Something that gets people to step away from their work for a moment, keeps your hands busy and phone away and encourages people to talk to each other.
