In my experience: All jobs suck! Some pay better than others. Profiting from personal projects is the exception, not the rule. I too find it difficult to retain complex information in my head - unlike many of my colleagues who seem to be

I have had some biz folks freak out when I used bigcorp@mydomain.com, they just couldn't grok how that wasn't like joe@bigcorp.com. So I now just use a generic term, but unique for each site. With a catchall on the mail routing I

VR, GPUs, graphics are a niche area and most jobs require both experience and some qualifications. Perhaps you could get some general developer experience while you wait for your PR and then make the decision whether you still need the M.Sc

The Golden Rule: They with the gold make the rules. Capiche? It is rare for anybody to drop $2.5m and not exert some level of control over what you do and how you "invest" that money. Having a board seat makes it clear that they

If anything bugs me greatly, then I whip up a solution that works for me. I apply this process not only in the field of computers, but also in the workshop, the garden and our home. That's what engineers do!

By knowing Lisp/Scheme I found it easier to understand the core concepts in JavaScript. Brendan Eich set out to implement Scheme in the Netscape browser. Due to marketing and business management pressure he ended up creating a hybrid

It's a great idea. You would need to plan this carefully. Most senior devs probably couldn't effectively communicate all those points without a pre-crafted plan. Effectively you would need to fuse technical writing skills with sc

You wrote: "his b2c idea" -- so you are making "his idea" a reality. Ethically, you shouldn't go "solo". If you were to break-up and take the idea, he might go ballistic and sue you, etc. If you actually g

Of course, this is only a single data point ... I would pick GitHub, simply because it hosts most of the projects that I already use in some form. GitHub communities for most projects are very supportive and engaged.

There are other options, e.g. Microsoft, some large multi-nationals or even national research organisations. In the latter, it might be possible to start in a technician role and then progress to a PhD part-time.

It might be feasible to do a Masters by Research, get such a job and then upgrade to a PhD on the job.

I have never had the experience of working for any of the FAANGs. But I have worked for several multinational big-name corporations. Much later in my career I decided to take a sabatical and do a PhD in software engineering. I expected it

I can relate to your optimistic view. I was there once. By all means do the PhD if it is in an area that you are passionate about. You should remember that getting tenure is extremely difficult, so a career in academia is a very long shot.

Once you commit to your PhD work, you won't have time to play with your kids. Believe me, I've gone down that path. It was an 8 year journey with lots and lots of roadblocks, challenges, mental and physical health issues, etc. Fo

AFAIK both Lisp and Smalltalk environments are image based. That is, all source code and all objects are stored in memory. You need to save that image in order to continue from where you left off. Snapshots are also used to allow rollback
