...unless maybe you want to write highly-optimized code for special applications, or maybe to write compiler code generators. Assembly language knowledge is still useful otherwise to understand what the machine really does.

I think that's 100% correct. I have 25 years' experience and am employed making less today (in a startup) than I did then (also in a startup) in constant dollars. Is 25 years' experience worthless these days? (I didn't sit on my technical

I've heard that folks have done it (more than a year ago) but, apparently, the runtime takes a while to load and that makes the app practically unusable.

Very Asimovian, don't you think? Isaac Asimov wrote either 506 books (or 515, say some sources) in his 72-year lifetime. (Jan 2, 1920 - Apr 6, 1992)

OnLive was founded by Steve Perlman - one of the 3 co-founders of WebTV. Steve is the consummate Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur - brilliant geek, business guy, product visionary, cheerleader -- all rolled into one with a nice-guy perso

Not only that, but I have Foxit as my default pdf reader, and when I update Reader on Win7, it forces itself to become the default reader --- WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. This is just aggressively rude of Adobe.

I'm curious why they didn't put in a Blu-Ray reader/writer, if they're going to put in an optical drive at all?

Thanks. Look, it's the nature of text-only that doesn't capture very much of a person's "state". In order to do that with any sort of fidelity, a considerably longer post is required. Of course something short like that could be interpr

I'm also curious. I suspect once the iPad2 and a slew of Android tablets with front-facing cameras are in the wild, we'll see lots of interesting software...

When I was a Junior at MIT in 1975, working in the Large Systems Group (the PDP-10) in Marlboro as a summer co-op student, I asked some of the DEC old-timers what would happen if I invited Ken Olsen over to my little summer sublet in Marlbo

This sentiment is not new. See "Microsoft at Apogee" by John Walker (founder of Autodesk, and a really brilliant guy): http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/msapogee.html Note the date: 9 Feb 1997 (!)

I completely agree. I met him about 10 years ago when both he and I were consulting at Olivetti Research Labs in Cambridge UK. A most gentlemanly man! So humble for being such a giant in the field.

What is "MM"? Millimeters? I'm joking of course, but I don't understand what "MM" means in a money context. I know that $1K is one thousand dollars, $1M is one million dollars, $1B is one billion dollars, $1T is one trillion dollars, and

I think that's an interesting point, but wouldn't computer language polyglots actually be the sort of engineers that Google is trying to snare?

I'm not quite so sure that's an apt analogy. For instance, Chuck does not believe in evolution and subscribes to intelligent design. More about him at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Norris

I'm not sure why you can't have something like flash. Imagine if the browser, noticing it's about to download a .flv, would not d/l the .flv, but would trampoline that to a backend server that would transcode to, say, .mp4 and then your bro
