‘The Magus’, by John Fowles. Masterful. I have only read a few chapters but I highly recommend ‘The Beginning of Infinity’ by David Deutsch, it’s just so interesting!

Hey, this is pretty interesting, you can sear food with a laser with good control over how deep the heating penetrates. This could be good for ‘torching’ fragile proteins like seafood. It’ll probably only be used for some highly processed f

All those construction problems are pretty nerve wracking to read about. It seems that the major risks of these plants has shifted from operational hazards and design flaws to possible construction faults. > The waste heat, an output com

Military spending isn’t measurable in a reliable way. Military spending has many other dependencies beyond accumulating destructive force, eg jobs, petrodollar concerns. Disarmament treaties have a clear game theoretic rationale for the mos

Correct. Having said that most proteins we are interested in fold in a narrow range of pH and temperatures as maintained in a cell in a large organism.

Derek Lowe draws a similar conclusion: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/more-protein-foldi... The real ‘breakthrough’ IMHO is that deep learning is so generally useful, rather than any specific applicatio

My take on this is that if you live in a country where there was widespread use of less effective vaccines, where resources are limited for booster doses, and there is very limited access to treatments which we now know reduce disease sever

There is one misconception to avoid about having kids. People focus too much on the part where children are young, presumably because this is the part they see happening around them. At the same time they ignore what it means to have childr

A major issue I have with these ergo keyboards is the impossibility of trying them before buying them. Any solutions for this? I guess it is pay to play or stick with normal layouts.

It's awkward to be sure, and often seems out of place, but that is Anime. Evangelion is no different. To be fair, there are such gratuitous elements in most TV and movies.

Note that these mice were fed a high fat diet (HFD), essentially toxic fat overload to generate disease phenotypes that one can demonstrate an improvement in. Mice normally eat a mainly grain based diet, so getting 45% of calories from fat

Some great advice here already. It is a little hard to be more specific without knowing what the disease is. An important first step is to consider the probability that this is a condition with a genetic basis, based on what is already know

Need to make a drug out of the small molecule inhibitor. There is a medicinal chemistry process that takes quite a while (several years at times) to get to something you can actually give to people. Then there is safety testing in animals.
