Not my experience of twitter. I follow a few people who provide a stream of high quality insights about 99% of the time. It has materially helped my career for example. I don’t use it as entertainment, I never tweet anything myself, I don’t

One explanation for the difference between tiktok and instagram could be that tiktok doesn’t have a crystallized business model yet and is just focusing on growing its network as much as possible. Presumably it will end up as bad as every o

A fully socialised healthcare system a la Canada won’t fly in the USA (this is obvious?). There are models eg in Australia where there is pretty good socialised care, and also a private system where you either pay up or have private health

Yeah, and the growing user base, widening ecosystem, and continual stream of analysis packages being written only in R suggests that lots of others agree. An important factor not often mentioned is that I think R really helps individual dev

There are quite a lot of less severe conditions which aren’t easily testable on an embryo. That was the motivation for the research as I understand it. The whole polygenic thing isn’t very compelling, I agree.

Impressive study, kudos to the bioinformaticians who did this! This could be an option for parents with a genetic condition who don’t want to pass it on. In terms of gattaca style super people (which I find quite repugnant) the recombinatio

If you are interested enough to ask this question, suggest you read more about CRISPR and answer your own question. It is not possible to say the kids are fine unless you are their pediatrician. Also it is HIV (the infection) they would be

First of all it wasn't necessary. Vertical transmission of HIV can be dealt with in other ways. Why expose these kids to pointless risk? No medical researcher with an ounce of integrity or care would do something like this. Secondly, i

Not sure how you can actually write this comment without realising how silly it is. It makes no sense to compare normal human procreation, a process which has evolved over billions of years and has many remarkable features, to this complete

My two comments are that firstly, some fields don’t support the genius narrative. Consider the eradication of small pox. This is definitely in the top 5 best things humans have ever done, and may ever do. But there are no geniuses associate

It’s a phenomenon in medical school. Some people just can’t get through the exams. You can’t just read the textbooks, it isn’t that easy. And anyway, the volume of facts is enormous.. It happens because people aren’t coached or mentored at

Renewables are fair-weather energy sources, both literally and geopolitically. Hopefully it never comes to that, but off-shore wind is a trivially easy target in a war. Solar too is not very defendable. Power plants are a bit better (in a s

My viewing is pretty broad, I’ve seen these movies except Magnolia. What you are describing is the placing of a movie in a cultural context. This is criticism, not learning on an individual level. For example, take Mulan. I can generate a f

I disagree that one learns anything important from a (non-documentary) movie. Movies are an experiential but non-interactive art form that resists internalisation. At best they make you feel a certain way for a short while, in my experience

This is unlikely to work, as the brain regulates many bodily functions on a neurohormonal basis, so the headless body won’t develop properly. You can get abnormal heart rhythms from a stroke in certain parts of the brain for example. Also i

With respect, this isn’t an accurate interpretation of an odds ratio. If you look at other cancers with a clear viral cause (EBV and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, HPV and cervical cancer), you will see that nearly 100% of tumours show evidence

This evidence is preliminary and the odds ratios are small. Also, consider the very high prevalence of prostate cancer - it is implausible that STDs are a major or important cause.

The effect sizes of carcinogenic (or potentially carcinogenic) environmental risk factors are small compared to the very high baseline risk of getting cancer over the long lifetimes we are blessed with. Some cancers, like prostate cancer, d
