Sweet fuck, that’s the worst and least informative title I’ve ever seen! None of it is accurate, all of it is misleading. What can happen is that a white dwarf (which is not a star, but a stellar remnant) can be sufficiently heated and com

Its possible, but not at all feasible. It’s also not really practical and the nature of it undercuts the usual “where are all of the intelligent species colonizing the galaxy?” arguments which tend to crop up.

Why would you bother taking a trip that involved leaving your entire species hundreds of thousands, even millions of years behind you? It would be energetically expensive, and the civilization that launched it couldn’t expect to care or rem

I used to live in Andover, MA in a prior existence, and while the town is very rich it is also as they say, very historic. I wouldn’t be shocked if the infrastructure was ancient. As for Lawrence (disclaimer: it may have changed) it was a s

SpaceX has been kicking ass for a while now, I wouldn’t bet against them being in it for the long haul. BUT, I don’t think the people who sign up for this should seriously expect to fly around the moon. That is a very very non-trivial engin

I think the broadening palette and recovering from WWII and processed food had a lot to do with it. You can only make so many things in a truck, but if you’re able to draw from worldwide traditions it represents real variety. Everything fro

Surely part of the problem is that so many people love or want to live in a place that long-term, can’t get water, is subject to deveststing earthquakes, and is overpopulated in terms of what can be sustained in a sane manner over time? It

As I understand it that was (is?) the plan, to build the cars and batteries under the same roof. I think Tesla and Panasonic were talking about building a similar factory in China too, although I don’t know the status of that today.

Buy a shaker of something like Nu-Salt or other sodium alternative and pop it in the mix. That’s not a factor in a hangover though, it really only matters if you’re losing a lot of fluids due to illness.

We're in a post-Theranos world. Which was in turn in a post-Enron world. The one sure way to make sure that crap can keep happening is to pretend that something has really changed, so it can’t happen again. It can, stay vigilant.

Not getting typhus from a rotting pile of horse is a definite win, but a Pyrrhic victory if we end up trashing the entire planet as a result of global warming. Less horse shit was a boon for sanitation in big cities, but TEL was a bone ride
