Yes I came in to say something similar. I would of absolutely loved to attend MIT or Stanford but went a shoddy 3rd tier state school. All this talk about research opportunities and connections with renown professors does not apply to stude

Your post specifically said SPEAR hunting. You do not hunt small game with a spear. Trapping is usually the most effective way of getting meat in the wild. Off topic but some of the best traps are large modern mouse-traps. Just make sure to

I love bow-fishing! But shooting targets as a child is hardly the same. Getting a powerful, accurate shot in itself takes a lot of concentration. But when hunting for sustenance it means getting up before dawn, tracking animals for miles on

You are severely underestimating the mental difficulty of spear hunting in relation to writing a couple of lines of code.

Exactly, I know a Columbia law grad who works in NYC. His firm hires nothing but Harvard, Columbia, and Yale grads. He said that it's not because a Berkeley or Texas grad isn't just as good it's because they have a certain culture and in ca

I have to agree. Part of my family was exiled from Spain for being heavily involved in the ETA, the spanish consider us terrorists for blowing up cars and refusing to speak spanish. In Mexico another part of my family lost many, many young

I think you need to know a little more technical stuff to get a job now in days. I think that an entry level developer should know a language and framework well. Enough RoR to build produce a few sample websites, pretty easy thanks to place

My favorite part: "Not all companies succeed, some fail to embrace change. This is the way technology in the free market works. The software industries success has not been driven by government regulation but by freedom and the basic human

Solid analysis, the only other online community I frequent is zerohedge and they have been calling it biflation for some time now. Things like housing, equity, and bond prices will deflate while commodity prices will continue to inflate.

That struck me as odd, like the author has not really traveled extensively. I spent some time in Sweden recently and was surprised by the the lack of warmth even by the customer service workers. I've been to several countries that do not "e

I recently saw this episode and you misheard. He did say that he wanted a 6 figure salary to "live the L.A. life", and he repeated that statement more than once. I like the show but agree with a lot of your points, my understanding is that

I only want to point out the absurdity of your first sentence "recessions since the late 1970s" So the timeline for your analysis is ~30 years? That is not convincing to me, this current recession is already going on 4 years and shows no si

My grandfather was a welder and had a workshop in the back of his house. He took pride in being able to build anything and not buy it from the store, if anything he owned ever broke he would hack it himself. When I was a youngin, about 12,

Terrible comparison, I use the roads because there are no other, better alternatives. When given a choice I always pick UPS or FEDEX over the post office for shipping, and looking at the financial position of the USPS I am in the majority.

Do not learn C or C++ as a first language. Zed Shaw says it himself in the introduction to LCTHW. Start off with an easier language like Ruby or Python to be able to grasp the concepts. Learn the Hard Way series are available for both as is

I think you should stay in school. I never say that to anyone but 1 more year at a good university will fly by, most american kids take 5 years for a liberal arts degree at a state school. Like the other poster said, startups come and go.

In California it was $50,000 for the 08-09 year. But if you read the footnote it states "since 2000-01, the average annual cost has increased by about $19,500." Almost a $20 thousand increase in 8 years, I'd hate to see what it is now or wo
