Let's not forget that Gawker monied up ahead of the trial, too. In a January 2016 staff memo, Gawker CEO Nick Denton described an investment by Columbus Nova (controlled by Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselburg) as a way to make sure his

Per-word is usually a rough yardstick that's invoked when trying to figure out the flat rate for pieces of various sizes. It lets publications quote 500x for shortish pieces of about 500 words; 1,200x for mid-sized pieces of about 1,20

In the realm of prank names, this one is actually pretty good. It's not sexist, racist, obscene or infused with hate speech. I can see shutting down a prank name that's got hurtful overtones. But this one is playful and harmless.

Total market capitalization is roughly $500 billion. So buying back $2.3 billion of shares only shrinks the number of shares by less than 0.5%. That improves EPS by all of about 3 cents. Not enough to matter.

Big budget syndrome. If you've got $200 million to make a movie, the bridges MUST blow up. Bloomberg stands alone among U.S. media companies as a place with lots of available cash for whatever projects catch the top folks' fancy.

Add Theranos's governance issues to the list, too. Most Valley startups make do with non-famous directors who hold VC/angel stakes -- and are prone to riding management hard about real or imagined problems with the business. That
