Prototype on the JVM but compile to C for production or performance critical tests? Ideally, no refactoring required at all. I guess it also helps to work with a dialect with more momentum. E.g. its easier to find support, on- and offline.

Exactly. And as other have pointed out here, its ironic that of all places a newspaper could be from, the New York Times ignores this fact.

What are you then? All my (little) retirement money got either paid into the German or Swiss system. And no, I don't think my retirement is safer than that of my US friends. Frankly, my plan is to just never retire. But of course that's ju

In a way, do all these different side effects make automation even more important? Modeling them doesn't sound easy, but I would imagine that our mental capacity for evaluating solutions is the real bottleneck here.

Rudolf Kalman, the guy who invented the Kalman Filter, seems to be interested in this kind of stuff, too. He gave a talk at TUM a few years ago where he tried to motivate students to work on the problem of inverting transfer functions. The

TLDR: Works great. You can keep your hands on the desk. Uses infrared field like the Kinect but maybe time of flight (ToF) as well. I thought this is an excellent review. Much better than the Technology Review article that was posted here

I think one way to improve this situation is to focus on results and casually use features and techniques along the way rather than focus on features and techniques and have contrived examples to show off them off. Yes, exactly! You have

Does it support a view where you only see new posts since the last visit? Or alternatively sort by the most recent posts? This is something that bothers me. Say, there is an interesting discussion with ~100 comments and I read all of them.

Good point. Would it be preinstalled on 20 million computers, though? Also, it seems like they needed to work at Apple because: - They needed access to an unreleased computer (hardware). - They needed feedback from other Apple employers.

Turns out the author wrote about that problem, too [1]. The advice is mostly on how memorize names when you get introduced personally, but admittedly this is an even more important problem. Recommended read. [1] http://www.pgbovine.net/on-

Oh, that was from you, too? I just read this a few days ago (was actually recommended here on HN [1]) and thought it was terrific. That might be one of my biggest problems in science - I have a hard time memorizing people's names. [1] http

Thx for your reply. Makes sense. Other than abstracts, the reference are usually behind a pay wall. But how does, e.g. Google Scholar estimate the number of citations? Do they only look at papers which are not behind a pay wall or do they b

So, despite having spend some time surfing the web, mostly right after the device was announced, I still don't know how the Leap Motion works. I realize, that this is proprietary technology so it might be simply unknown. Still, from a magaz

So, what you are saying is, that it doesn't exist? Why is no one building this? I understand, that there is less demand than for web search. But there still is a lot of demand from smart and skilled people, no?

Couldn't find an official statement, that the Unity3D development software will run under Linux. It sounds more like the new update will only allow to build _games_ that run under Linux [1]. I hope I'm wrong.
