20M? Doesn't alter your point, but a pair of 3-gen-old ATI graphics cards manage on the order of 5000-6000M: Hash type: MD5, Hash: 6df23dc03f9b54cc38a0fc1483df6e21 Device #0: [RV870] 850.00 Mhz 1600 SP Device #1: [RV870] 850.

I used Solr for the previous generation of FreshBSD[0], and migrated to ElasticSearch and Tire over a year ago and haven't looked back. The docs for both ElasticSearch and Tire leave something to be desired, but it's still so much nicer to

Context switching isn't that big a deal, it's actually pretty good for responsiveness since everything isn't being serialised through a single thread. Compare/contrast animgifs on a busy Opera vs a busy Chrome - Opera will regularly freeze

I generally find Chrome likes to start falling over around the 3.5GB mark (as measured by chrome://memory) - larger images stop loading, pages stop rendering properly, and eventually it can end up crashing. Address space fragmentation I'm

Amusing thing about that page - it's full of '\$100', and uses Javascript to strip the \'s out, replacing them with empty <span> elements. Not sure I really want to know why...

Quick data point: DragonFlyBSD's HAMMER filesystem uses a periodic cronjob to garbage collect and otherwise maintains full history of writes.

Slow and barely usable in stock Android Gingerbread and Honeycomb browsers, as well as Firefox mobile. Massive clipping errors in stock ICS browser render it unusable. Opera Mobile manages about the best, ignoring the lighting outright. H

The Ogg container is optional, and I can't say I've seen it used much, if ever - I gather its main use was for streaming. FLAC has its own metadata as part of the spec: http://flac.sourceforge.net/format.html#metadata_block

If it's mainly the performance you're after, have a look at JRuby. It's already a decent chunk faster than MRI/YARV, and with Java 7 and invokedynamic there's a lot more to look forward to and play with now. Last week one of the JRuby core

It has half a dozen rendering modes too, due to various driver bugs and GPU performance profiles. There are massive threads on the forum of people trying different settings to squeeze out a few more FPS, especially on lower end hw.
