It's obvious that Google withheld or made it prohibitively expensive for Apple to pay for the liscence to google maps. It does retroactively make the case for handling these things in-house, especially when the partner is a competitor. Afte

From an efficiency/sustainability point of view, I have a basic discomfort with the idea of throwing away all the wifi/controller stuff each time you need a new bulb. I know LEDs don't run out very fast, but they do run out. This has cost i

I think a big part of the pitch of this thing is that it's ultra-easy to install, even in places where you can't change the electrical stuff. If the wifi stuff was in the switch, you'd have to turn off the electricity, unscrew the faceplate

For the dozenth time: this is not some radical choice Apple made. Apple is, as a public company, responsible to act in its own interest within the current economic system. The system is screwed up, but that doesn't mean that any single comp

This is nothing but an obvious troll. If you think Jobs would be disappointed by the new iPhone 5, you might do well to realize that he likely approved it a while before his death. Meanwhile, he thinks Jobs would be mad at Ive for not devia

If everyone who made a big pronouncement about HN's sad demise instead submitted a great article, went through and up-voted every story and comment they thought was interesting, and left some thoughtful comments, we would probably be in muc

I think it stands to reason that if the release were no big deal, if it was just something like low-paying taxes, he wouldn't be so resistent. He's taken a lot of egg to the face to keep these things secret, so there has to be a reason why.

From the guidelines: "Please avoid introducing classic flamewar topics unless you have something genuinely new to say about them." There's only one item in the top 10 at the moment that isn't relevant to the criteria as you've laid them out

You can use "model" to mean an example to follow. For example, "37 signals was the model for my software business" or "she was a model employee."

This might be overly simple, but it seems like the root of the problem on both sides is just the scheduling of a day-long interview at a place that's so obviously a bad fit for the candidate. It would be better for all involved to have a mo

I don't think border crossings are really a daily occurrence for most in Europe. More common than in the US? Sure. But still not anything like a majority of users do this often, and I'm sure almost none of them are happy with having to do s

Most phone users never see their sim card. It's installed for them, and they never have occasion to take it out. Having something removable that's put in by the provider, as phone sims usually are, could be fine, but it's not so different f

There is no way the average consumer would prefer this. The experience of using technology is rightfully becoming less and less technical . Making everyone have to insert physical memory to install an operating system when they buy a phone

This is absurd and frustrating. Apple is not responsible for the broken patent system. Apple is a public company. If Apple decided to hold itself to a set of standards more stringent than its competitors, it would be hampering itself and ac

OK— last post on this. If you think it's a CIA conspiracy trying to undermine Wikileaks, this rape charge is part of that story. Obviously that's in question, which is why it's not possible to think of this as obviously inappropriate.
