This was exactly the reason I cancelled my subscription. I'm paying for no ads, so don't shove them down my throat when I want to watch something without it fucking up the algorithm. Just because I want to watch a video my friend

When it comes to corporations, don't attribute to stupidity that which can be adequately explained by greed. This could easily be avoided by having proper security engineering, but that costs money! They're only about a decade lat

I fear for a future where financial privacy is non-existant. While I recognize the potential for abuse and enabling for bad actors to skirt laws, I think it should be private by default with measures that allow for auditing. For example, Mo

I too look forward to the post scarcity society that replicators would enable, but until then we as a species really need to learn to rein it in before we consume ourselves into a corner we can't get out of.

People get buttmad and downvote you for pointing out manmade global extinction events and daily death tolls from pollution. HN isn't immune from these shitbags. This site has a lot more capitalists than environmentalists.

Ah, yeah, that makes sense. Hadn't considered that angle. Would track with the user behavior exposed here, namely getting their stuff from an unofficial source (be it the device itself or the firmware).

Why complicate things? Just smash the device. This is only effective if the user doesn't have their seed phrase. Edit: Looks like I was beaten to this down thread.

GrapheneOS has a network permission that you can toggle. I'm still hoping for an application firewall that will also let me use my real VPN, or hoping that my VPN provider will integrate this functionality directly so I don't have

The down voting of the parent is wholly unjustified. This is a factual reality that has already taken place and continues on to this day. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left a

Even if it's not available via the charger they'll just do this with ALPR or their proprietary apps. Gotta love surveillance capitalism.

A healthcare provider I used in the past had these things, absolutely hated how they used dark patterns to try to get people to consent to this crap. Really wish the US had more backbone to fight these kinds of practices.

Screw that, I'm worried that the megacorps are gonna screw this up and make it even more American dystopian.

When it comes to megacorporations with a history of anticompetitive behavior, I much prefer "Never attribute to stupidity that which is adequately explained by greed."

Acknowledging the mass extinction event that we caused is sensationalism? We've completely fucked the climate in a bad way, and are triggering the complete destruction of entire species on a daily basis. Denying that is the actual ri

Depends, do you want to count the mass extinction event that we've created? If so, you're really not going to like the answer.
