Yes! Speeding things up just causes distances to increase and facilities to centralize. Game-theoretically, each individual does save time, but soon everyone has a car and the equilibrium shifts. It's like two income households, colleg

When you watch Ramani's videos, you can see everyone around her shrink in fear of getting the "narcissist" label themselves, and offer her deference. It doesn't take a genius to see why she'd invest in a professiona

This seems dumb on the part of the bank. Unless terrorists are really, really stupid, classifying the first name "Isis" as "terrorist" is bound to have a 100% false positive rate.

The fact that Britain and Scandinavia were, in ancient and early Medieval times, actually very diverse places, is interesting, because within living memory those places are /believed/ to have been > 90% "white". This

Population voluntarily goes down with increased education and reproductive rights for women. You don't need something heavy-handed. You just need feminism. Get the fertility rate down to something like 0.9 and just wait. You don't

Why should I pay for your locally-grown children when I have alternatives? Say each woman has maybe one child late in life, so the population has a half-life of about 35 years. In exchange, I get to double the educated workforce of my socie

In this metaphor, diversity is a consumable resource. It is a store of exergy. You can extract work by connecting reservoirs; in the process, the difference is destroyed. And as you note, if isolation between reservoirs is imperfect, then w

Reverse mode autodiff is best implemented with a non-local transformation of the program: First you run the original operations forward; then you run corresponding operations in reverse order. You can do this with a library by implementing

Actually I'm wrong about L'Hospital's Rule in this problem; it solves nothing here. I would insert an "[EDIT ...]" into my original post to avoid misleading people, but it's too late to edit. It doesn't ma

Here's the (pedantically-worked) example with reverse-mode: Program: y = g(x) = x^3 z = f(y) = cuberoot(y) Want: dz/dx Reverse-mode autodiff: // Forward pass y = g(0) = 0^3 = 0 g'(0) = 3

Thank you, this is interesting. I just tried. You need L'Hospital's Rule. I'd realized this was an issue with forward-mode autodiff, but hadn't thought about reverse-mode to realize it comes up there too. In general, NaN
