"It's a completely new market," and "we have no current competitors" are usually looked upon with suspicion by sophisticated investors. It's rare to have a completely new market--Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook... they all had competitor

Not to nitpick, but I wouldn't call that a marketing analysis. Marketing analysis is more like how big is the market segment? Who are the biggest players in the space, what are their products, and what are their weaknesses? These are questi

I agree. I've taken a salary significantly less than market value after an acquisition and would never do it again. I actually think it caused other people at the company who weren't involved in the deal to discount my ongoing contribution.

I would open up the alpha only if you have third parties (or customers) who want to write to your API. Then you should get it into their hands as soon as possible. Otherwise, wait until you have a solid beta. If you screw up your first rele

The reason [the site was slow] was not the traffic... but the number of visitors who were creating new accounts. The only better startup problem than that is "the site was slow because so many people were trying to give us mone

The Kindle is roughly the size of a paperback, and comes with a nice leather case so it's not awkward to carry. But it's the integration with Amazon that really does it for me. You can select books online, and have them sent to the Kindle.

I concur. I'm a top-10 reddit poster and Hacker News is my first site of the day now. Keep up the good work and don't be afraid to ban the idiots. Now if only somebody would set up a "Political News" site using the same code base...

Unit testing should be at the absolute top of the list. My current project is thoroughly wrapped in unit tests, and it gives us the power to make deep structural changes very late in the development process. I've never felt so confident tha

Insightful--this will actually happen. I've already been in some telecommuting relationships (professional) where we just leave the ip video phone on constantly. You don't have to call to communicate, you just talk to the phone as if the pe

With my first startup company, we only had about 2 weeks to prepare for our first VC presentation. I needed a quick way to build a professional-looking spreadsheet with projections. John L. Hesheim, author of High Tech Startup, sells a spre

This article made me laugh out loud. My first startup was a bootstrap with $20k in the bank. We were eating hotdogs for lunch and drinking tap water, trying to make our money last. If somebody had given me startup advice that included "buy

I'll disagree here. I've been through several successful fund raising rounds, exclusively from corporate sources. Granted, this was not inner-circle silicon valley VC. But not a single deal would have happened had we not had a 20+ page busi

Silverlight is a subset of WPF so we should be able to compile it as an EXE, put a different template and tabstrip on it, and have something that looks like a Microsoft Office 2007 app. I don't know any way to do that with Java.

Thanks. I just overnighted it from Amazon. My coding partner wants to use recursive database queries to do this--I want to avoid it because it's slower, breaks our object model, and makes the application non-database-agnostic. (Currently, w
