I wrote this article and was very surprised someone posted it on Hacker News, where the audience is highly technical. Your criticism makes it sound like the post was intended to be the ultimate guide to custom building silent PCs for the te

I just joined Facebook a few months ago. I was afraid of it being a huge time waster with low signal to noise. So my expectations were quite low. Turns out the experience, with less than 30 Facebook friends, is even worse than I imagined it

You ask: Why not let them discover it for themselves? In our social circles, many kids see Star Wars before age 5 and most have seen it by age 6. For many, that will be their first exposure to violence and evil. Depending on your values aro

Our kid had us read to him every part of the Star Wars story multiple times before we just let him watch #4 a week ago. It accomplished the main objective laid out in this nice article: Timing it so they're able to "discuss and analyze the

According to a friend of mine who worked on the search team, Inktomi shifted its (management and CapEx) focus away from search and onto other projects. He thought at the time that even with the constraints of not competing with their own cu

Fair point but the 9700 is over 2 years old - and when it came out it had better battery life than the competition. The 9900 which recently came out has better specs and still a good battery life. What's killing Blackberry IMO is that it's

The author asserts that "The first company—whether it’s an incumbent phone maker or Ph.D.-laden start-up in a garage—that figures out how to solve the smartphone battery problem will see enormous gains." Nope. Blackberry has had battery lif

I tried it for a few minutes and it needs work. Adding a non-Wordpress.com site is awkward and results in getting all the posts and all the comments. I'm hoping Automattic rapidly improves it to become a real competitor to Google Reader.

The article and the conclusions of the underlying study bring up more questions than answers for me. Such as: 1) Does the importance of talent vary by domain? 2) They show working memory matters. Does working memory matter by different amou

This makes for a great story but how do we know it wasn't totally made up? There is no link from the consumerist article to a post from the original source (someone whose purported first name is Ryan). Searching for word-for-word sentences

I restart the computer and chrome each morning. And when Chrome gets to slow I restart it mid day sometimes. I also clear caches once every few weeks which seems to speed it up a little, but not like it did when going from Chrome 14 to Chro

Anyone else noticing a big speed increase? Chrome 14 was actually much slower than the prior few versions on my 7 year old Windows XP system (1 GB RAM). I'm experiencing much faster page loads with Chrome 15.

I'll go out on a limb here and say I like the basic idea. One major detail I would change is to make it a $100,000 or $50,000 minimum instead of $500,000. There are many parts of the country where it's hard to even find a house that's as ex

I pay $49/year for 10GB. Dropbox doesn't advertise but if you request it they'll quote you for other storage amounts and let you sign up. 20GB for $49/year is what I really want. Hopefully they'll do that soon. Here is what they told in lat

As a paying Dropbox user, one of the things I most appreciate about them is how they are slow and cautious about rolling out new features, placing more importance on keeping the software stable, reliable, and reasonably fast. I also use Eve

I disagree with your assessment that "not one of [Google's] three positions is easily defensible in the face of determined competition, and I suspect it is more by luck (and inertia) than judgement that they have avoided this fate so far."

I never read beyond top 200 from front page. However, 5-20x/week I click on "new" and skim headlines from the top 10 or so (or anything on the page with at least 2 votes). Most of these never make it to the top 200, yet I typically find abo

If you ask a variety of people how readable they find a typical web site, you'll receive almost uniform responses that many (or most) pages are difficult to read. Font size is a factor but there are many more factors, which I outline here:

I own a Blackberry 9700 which was a nice phone when it came out but have been underwhelmed by the 9780 and in some ways even the 9900 (no autofocus camera, no UMA). That's why it's the first thing I thought of. I think I would prefer an iPh

This upgrade reminds me of the upgrade from the Blackberry 9700 to the Blackberry 9780. In both cases: camera is considerably improved, processor and/or memory modestly improved, more interface eye (or ear) candy. It's no wonder that many p
