They were entrenched in a few niche markets: Education, Music Production, Desktop Publishing. Photoshop, Pagemaker, ProTools were all Mac first, so that's where the users were and they were locked in due to files, plugins, fonts etc.

This is such nonsense, using GPL software can't 'infect' software you are writing. I could understand having a rule about not putting GPL source code on your machine in the case you might accidently reuse some of it -- but ev

I'd be interested in how the GPL has held back open source and what license would be better. Haven't the licenses like BSD/MIT just made it easier to take open source code and lock it down?

That's what happens when you compete on price. Nobody is going to pay an extra $50 for an Android phone over another comparable Android phone. Samsung alone outspends Apple on marketing. Samsung needs to continuous battle against the o

Isn't the issue that Google didn't fork it, but instead re-implemented it and the re-implementation had Oracle code in it? If Google had forked it and kept their version under the GPL they would have been fine.

Can you recommend some good code / APIs to check out that don't do it block based? I usually use JUCE which is block based, and I assumed it was just a thin wrapper around the OS APIs which we also block based.
