I developed Eureka Science News (http//esciencenews.com) completely under Windows (using WAMP). Be sure to backup everything often though, catching a nasty machine-disabling adware on your dev box a week prior launch can be stressful (been

Example of a RSS feed item : http://esciencenews.com/sources/science.daily/2008/05/24/fin... Link to the source, no full content. The full content articles come from related press releases on universities websites, etc

You misunderstand how the site works. I'm not republishing RSS feeds of any of the source on the site. The articles come from copyright-free press releases related to the news published by other sites (sometimes, their content is the copy-p

I was really surprised from the low hits # from mashable, considering the traffic it gets. I think your explanation make sense, but I think I would have got much more hits from TC.

Statcounter.com is excellent for the real time statistics it provides; during a launch, you can know when a site just linked to you seconds after the first user visit your site. With Google Analytics, it can be hours before you can access y

It's indeed targeted at non-scientific people; bloggers, highschool students, etc. It`s a press release aggregator, but it also cluster news from other sites, giving more sources for each story. However, the big plus is that it ranks storie

Clustering is a 2 part process - calculate scores, then cluster. For the second part we used an open source perl API to a C library (very fast) for hierarchical clustering : http://search.cpan.org/~mdehoon/Algorithm-Cluster-1.38/ I picked

A server-side XML api would be ideal; javascript loads on every page and would add significant latency to page loads, which is unacceptable (and wasteful, and tough on your servers). Find someone who can code a Drupal and a Wordpress module

Also, if you do this, it would be nice to only link to the first occurrence of a wikilink (tried it on some astronomy pages, and the first occurrence of 'Earth' is nice to have, but not the 10th :P)
