I'd really like to see usage of Matrix/Riot instead. A federated, open network and you can easily bridge your existing slack channels.

A lot of community meshnet projects rely on their hardware because of the stability and low pricing. NYC Mesh is a great example, but there are dozens more that aren't known as well.

I do as much development in a local IDE as possible. From there I just depend on git and ssh. Screen makes things a little more manageable as well.

My friend did something similar back in 2013, http://hackaday.com/2013/07/07/raspberry-pi-learns-the-lost-... This project seems to have gotten around the hardware quirk though.
