The benefits could be way more immediate. Less supply might drive the price up, leading to less usage. 3M killing production and other signs of the product not having a future can drive away investments into competing suppliers.

phrom already mentioned the "old subscription-products die" aspect. The other thing games tended to do, that is basically a subscription, was frequent, sometimes yearly, releases. You just buy this years iteration of fifa or CoD.

Equating private with public messaging is ridiculous. Not sure how laws are in the US, but when doing support here in germany we had to have private in-game messages reported by a participant before we were even allowed to look at them. The
