A few ms as others have said, but it's also a non-deterministic delay. This is a problem for applications like time-of-flight measurement, so one way to account for this is to send a known signal on TX and look for it on RX

I'd argue that vendor lock-in is a far more important issue. You're right that non-technical people won't care about why decentralization matters. It's up to technical people to nudge the boat in the right direction. Th

Why is not wanting vendor lock-in a high bar? After dealing with Messenger, WhatsApp, Face time, etc all my life I'm tired of it. It doesn't matter if the code is open source, I'm still going to be locked in when all my frie

While e-mail usercount is not evenly distributed across many servers, the fact that it's open an interoperable gives you several things: - you can use whatever client/server you want (or host your own) - you can still communicate

I really doubt it was about security. My bet is on convenience and the fact that it's free for Non-North Americans while SMS is not.

There's been work on integrating the server and client together in a p2p fashion. Then you are essentially self-hosting on your phone/laptop when you run the client.

I can't believe I'm suggesting this, but maybe trade it through cryptocurrency. Pay a few bucks to create an account. It might get expensive to start a server and have others agree to federate with you though. Could also just us

These are all complaints about the app's UI, not Matrix or federated networks. > If we could do better, we would have done better by now. I'm guessing you might have said something similar about a non-profit running a massively

HN won't even get dark mode, so the only way we'd ever get Matrix on HN is through a random macroscopic quantum event.

It doesn't seem like these problems are fundamental to Matrix, though. I agree that Element is not that good, but if you were to replace Signal's backend with Matrix, your experience would (could?) be nearly identical as Signal is

A lot of open source projects are also "open" in the sense community contributions and interoperability, so people often take open source to mean these things as well. Signal is open source, but hardly open as in the sense above.

What's untrue about that? There haven't been any commits to Signal-Server for almost a year. https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server

> What prevents the same thing from happening to decentralized services? Nothing, but at least knocking a server offline doesn't bring down the whole network, which is indeed "better than Signal" on this front.

I'm guessing the federated aspect. You can jump ship to another server and not break your social graph. Also you can use alternative clients, which (I think) is against Signal's TOS, and is at least discouraged.

So is everyone OK with this big migration to another centralized service that doesn't interoperate? Imagine if e-mail had been like this. You can't talk to your friends if they have a different provider, and you're not allow
