An interesting question. I don't know of the design decisions or whether the fork idea predated UNIX. But to me, it's just the sheer simplicity. Compare to the basic process creation function on Windows, taking 10 arguments: http://msdn.mi

There are C interpreters around, like "cint" -- http://root.cern.ch/drupal/content/cint -- which is somewhat more stable, having been around since 1995. This C-REPL one seems to have the advantage of using gcc directly while cint is basic

Safari is based on the KDE browser's open source rendering engine, however. I don't know how much of it is left but certainly it was a huge boon for them -- and later Google -- to start with a highly standards-compliant and open code base.

The Danish Post has installed such a system for general packages here. If they cannot deliver, they stick it in such a machine (open 24/7) and you can pick it up. But you can also put a special delivery address on your package so it will en

Hah, check out that malloc page for OpenBSD for how you configure malloc globally (to e.g. enable debugging): you create a /etc/malloc.conf which is a symbolic link to a non-existant file the name of which determines options, e.g. "G<

You can go even shorter with help of one of the TLD registrars, e.g. http://dk./ is a working URL -- you may skip that dot in Firefox and use http://dk/ (Opera will assume you're confused and try to use dk.com).

Don't invoke mxmlc every time -- that has to start up Java, and that's what's slow. There's a compile "shell" named fcsh that comes with the Flex toolkit that starts up a JVM once and lets you recompile without having to relload all the lib

Interestingly the whistleblowers who got this get started will get a sizable fee -- I think something like $100 million between the 5 of them. Will that encourage more employees to come forward with evidence of wrongdoing?

Not that I know of. In the past I've allowed my process (which was essentially a HTTP-based app server) to evaluate commands from a secure source, then built a Python interpreter that sends what you type via to HTTP to it -- so you get a ps
