Plus things like: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/16/nyregion/police-unit-that... Not to mention historical corruption on a grand scale.

That’s a fair point, I overstated things. I’d rephrase by adding “at a F500 company” after both “middle managers” and “CEO’s” in my original post.

I’d add that failing as a middle manager gets you fired with very little, while failing as a CEO gets you fired with a golden parachute. Failing as a CEO also seems to do little to harm your future prospects.

My pleasure, and I’d just add two more things; sometimes Rx users will venture into the world of the black market, and get more than they bargained for. More commonly though, a disproportionate number of overdoses are found among people who

The following is all in my philistine opinion. The problem with philosophy is that science has crowded out most of the good stuff. Who cares about a philosophy of chemical reactions when we have chemistry? Philosophy is useful around issues

While that’s definitely a factor, I wouldn’t umderestimate just how much shutting down expression rubs a significant number of people in tech the wrong way. Some will object on libertarian grounds, some will object on slippery slope grounds

People mix and match drugs, they lose track of dosing (easy to do when you’re wrecked on opioids), and as their tolerance increases they up their dose. They also frequently take a prescribed drug in unsafe ways, such as insufflation or inje

Why do you think that? Is what I said inconsistent with a rejection of the “conscious rock” concept? Even if you did believe that, you’ve phrased your post in such a way that meaningful conversation is impossible, and any refutation would r

This is my viewpoint as well, with the additional though that where we can reduce the negative impacts of industrialization, we should. We can definitely do much more to reduce pollution, without giving up the advantages of industry.

I’m definitely saddened by my inability to believe in what no evidence exists to suggest is real, and I’m not being sarcastic. I’m sure that life would be less stressful if I could contextualize it in terms of spiritual meaning. What I was

We already know how (bombard it with Calcium-48 in a particle accelerator, or stick it in a nuclear reactor), but it’s not cost effective.

It’s always sad when people choose to believe in what they want, rather than what they have evidence for. I want to be loved by a god and live forever, but that doesn’t make me believe in any of that. I find it hard to ignore the pattern of

It can really pay off to live underground, feeding on things that eat detritus and also live underground. That’s pretty much the story of our distant ancestral mammals, and why were here having this chat. Burrow into the earth, hibernate, h

There is a reason, which is mainly a total loss of trust in the companies and institutions which would otherwise allay people’s fears. A lot of people also object to GMO, not for some crystsl-gripping reason, but because they don’t trust co

It doesn’t necessarily make anything easier that the natural default of courtesy in Japan is, when in doubt, “maximum formality is employed.” To be honest though, I prefer the sometimes confusing formality of Japan to the curtness (or downr

Isn’t that also HN? I don’t think the existence of the down button is a factor as much as the moderation. FB is a nightmare without a downvote, SO is like a dysfunctional family, and HN seems to mostly work.

It can be, but it manifestly isn’t and hasn’t been anytime in recent history. We’re so far from an abuse of it that radical and prolonged changes in society would be required before we had to worry about that particular slippery slope.
