I guess I'm using 'Nimby' in the wider sense to include all the red tape that slows down or blocks every building project in the UK. A project doesn't have to be individually targeted by Nimbies to be slowed down, they h

If EGL2 took 9 years to get approval, that's the fault of the Nimbies, right?

It's easy to blame project mismanagement, when it was always well known that undersea cables are much more expensive and difficult than the on-land cables that the Nimbies scuppered. And it's unsurprising that windfarms in Scotlan

It's not a real free market, though, if you ignore transmission. Since transmission is a scarce resource it needs to be part of the market to send the signal to build more of it (or more battery storage, or better located production).

You mess with the markets at your peril. If you pay people to produce electricity that can't be consumed then you will waste a lot of money. If the transmission capacity is limited you need to expose that signal to the market, not atte

We choose to be transparent when we fix stuff, even if it makes us look a bit silly :-) . We are certainly installing more logging and tracking of this sort of thing! In general I think the GC should auto-adapt as much as possible. It'

The problem is they are treating it as a free market issue with hourly auctions, but the 'free market' system ignores transmission. So the windmills can sell cheap electricity in the auctions that can't be delivered to anybo

The Norwegian grid is divided up into different regional grids and they each have different electricity prices. Those who build interconnects between the areas can get some of the price difference. It's very different from the UK mark

It's a huge issue, see the depressing web page on Südlink. Massively delayed, much more expensive, and less efficient because it has to be underground. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suedlink Germany, like the UK,

It's one thing who the blocks are assigned to, but that doesn't mean the whole block is assigned to the same country. In fact not many of the /8 blocks are only used in one country. I half-vibe-coded a zoomable map of the g

As a former member of the V8 team I found this very interesting. (I was pre-Sea-of-Nodes and mostly not working on the compiler.) Key quotes: most instructions end up being on the effect or control chain, which imposes a strict order on th

It's good that they post negative results, but it's hard to know exactly why their attempt failed, and it's tempting for me to make guesses without doing any measurements, so let me fall for that temptation: They are patching

JS has this error too, but nothing forces Java to have this issue if they fix the no-mutable-captures problem. Dart got this right from the start. Here's JS showing the same issue. for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) { array.push(

These Java features are ruined by not allowing mutable variables to be captured. Having to do the 1-element array trick when the compiler could just do it for me is insane. If you are making JavaScript look good you are failing as a languag

If the .h file is documenting which other header files it needs, what keeps that documentation up to date. This sounds like a very painful way to work, where .h files fail to compile (with very strange error messages because of the way C++

OK, when you only have as many .cc files as you have CPU cores, you should stop making them bigger. This is not an issue for big projects. The caching of compilation fails if you touch a central .h file. When you work on projects like that

My tip: Increase the size of .cc files. Since each .cc file is including tens of thousands of .h lines, you should not allow developers to check in < 100 line .cc files. The OP was seeing build times increase faster than loc. Probably so
