This was a major issue, but it wasn't a total failure of the region. Our stuff is all in us-east-1, ops was a total shitshow today (mostly because many 3rd party services besides aws were down/slow), but our prod service was large

I dunno man, what part of the AWS experience leaves you thinking the software is amazing? It's good enough, but there's no real evidence it's the best, simply the largest.

Yeah, it's nonsense. I think the core problem is that innovators typically only capture low single digit percent of the value they generate for society. Bell Labs existed in an anomalous environment where their monopoly allowed them to

Despite people mocking the parallel, I think it's actually pretty apt. RHNA is basically a socialist planning exercise because people were unwilling to stomach a market economy for housing construction and demanded state control throug

So it's better to hardcode your specific library name and deal with the same issue after people have reverse engineered it and started depending on it anyway?

The note about economists and data science in the article felt weird, because data science as a title was invented to get non-CS PhDs to do analyst work because they wanted smarter people doing it. The point of hiring an economics PhD in in

Nice anecdote, but if you follow the links in the post you will see this is the minority of these issues: "Altogether 71.5 percent of the PCs failed the RAM test and 14.66 percent the TPM test." https://www.theregister.

The articles about this tend to be misleading in that most computers failing the minimum requirements are failing the memory requirement not the TPM requirement, which is a lot less dire of a situation than having to replace your CPU since

GOOGL is up like 25% over the last few weeks after they resolved the DoJ lawsuit about Search bundling. Clearly there were some investors who thought that was a material risk to the business. Tesla is clearly a meme stock though, and an exa

This seems like an argument against the state in every form, you could say the same thing about the government collecting taxes, having a police department, courts etc. Unless you are a committed anarchist though, you likely see a limit to

Has performance of ANTLR generated code gotten better? I'm sure some of this was bad grammars, but I wasn't thrilled with what I got out of ANTLR ~15 years ago

It's usually fairly obvious when people have just seen the solution before. But also, interviews are fuzzy and not at all objective, false negatives happen as well as false positives. If you want people to know about these things you s

Constraint solvers are also often not applicable to the real world either. Many formulations scale in a way that is completely unusable in practice. Knowing how to get tools like Z3 or Gurobi to solve your problems is it's own skill an

Nobody here is actually even arguing about the proposal here, just repeating platitudes and analogies. I don't actually care about this topic at all, but people should do a better job of defending their positions.
