We definitely don't have good enough face recognition for use in combat. We have face recognition that mostly works if you've got a small pool of faces and a clear photo. Not really sure why you would want to put face recognition

I moved away from the bay area, because housing is the problem. Or at least housing + transit. The reason labor is expensive is because housing is expensive, which is totally unsurprising because everyone's cost to live there is hig

I'm curious what resources you found useful to learn stats modelling and what sorts of approaches have been useful. On one hand, it's almost a tautoloy that specific models should be better than general models, but I worked on som

I think Facebook is an example of a service that has - you use an email & password to log in, but your name is what is displayed everywhere. But Facebook has made other trade-offs that people might not always agree with: it requires peo

This is pretty cool! Where are you getting these images from? I would love to see this expanded to different genres of sites too. I've noticed that (niche) fashion websites have their own aesthetic that is a bit divorced from the mains

Colonialism is a loaded word, but if you look at India trying to force cell phone companies to manufacture in India I think there is a clear desire to drive economic development through policy. I don't really blame them either, China o

This seems sort of like a "Duh" moment to me, but Wheaton's deference to moderators here is amusing, since no-one ever cuts Twitter any slack.

Not sure how this works specifically, but usually you step back a bit and say that what you actually want to determine is not whether a user performed a transaction, but how many users who saw a specific ad bought a product, and then you de

I think the context that most commenters are missing here is that this is not an argument that you will make more money with a PhD. The focus of 80,000 hours is on "effective altruism" where the goal is to have the greatest positi
